You may be asking why Miami Airport is expecting itself to be short staffed if TSA personnel are essential.

TSA officials said despite fewer numbers, screeners aren't getting lax about their work.

To give them a hand, Pekoske said earnings had been processed for December 22, the day immediately following the start of what has now become the longest shutdown in USA history.

On this side of the border, YVR spokeswoman Andrea Pham said all operations at Vancouver International Airport were "normal" on Saturday, but recommended passengers check their flight status before heading for the airport.

"There have been two or three dozen normally, and this week we've seen that double", said Greg Chin, Communications Director for the airport.

For quick and easy parking, valet parking is available at the Dolphin Garage on the departure level outside of North Terminal D or the Flamingo Garage on the departure level outside of South Terminal J. Valet parking allows customers to drop off their vehicle with a parking attendant and walk directly to MIA's check-in area.

Bilello said there had been no spike in employees quitting and that on Tuesday, 5 percent of officers took unscheduled leave, up just slightly from 3.9 percent the same day past year.

In recent days, it has been reported that many screeners have called in sick in growing numbers, resulting in longer than usual waiting times at airport security checks. "We thank the public for their continued support and acts of kindness".

Airport authorities are expressing fear that the shutdown could soon worsen security screening.

Many TSA agents, who earn an average of $35,000 a year, are not showing up to work and some are considering resigning due to financial hardship, according to the TSA Council of the American Federation of Government Employees, or AFGE. The reason for the closure is a shortage of security screeners.

Tampa International Airport is working with local partners to launch a food pantry for federal workers starting Monday.

The FAA said in a statement that it is limiting investigations to "major accidents involving significant casualties and certain other accidents when failure to proceed with the investigation creates a significant risk to transportation safety" and added "if we identify an issue, we recall inspectors and engineers to address it". She said to do so amounts to "playing with our pain and hope".

Another TSA worker who did not want to be identified said she is struggling to pay rent. "We need them to keep the airport running". He said that the airport has about 700 TSA workers scheduled to work daily.

It's making even the most loyal employees, like him, lose faith.

That's the goal in Tampa, where the food pantry will also offer bus passes to help employees get to work during the shutdown.
