Poland's Internal Security Agency has detained a high-ranking employee of Chinese tech giant Huawei on suspicions of spying for China. The homes of both men, also in Warsaw, were also searched, according to Internal Security Agency spokesman Stanislaw Zaryn.

China's embassy has reached out to offer consular services to Wang, according to the South China Morning Post, which adds, "China's foreign ministry expressed grave concerns over the incident".

Bradley was a key public spokesman for Huawei Canada, which has been under the spotlight since Canadian authorities in December arrested the chief financial officer of its parent company at the request of the United States.

Zaryn told AP that prosecutors have charged the two men with espionage, but agents are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses. Counterintelligence officers also collected physical documents and electronic data from the local offices of Huawei and telecom provider Orange.

Just one month earlier, the GCSB had declined - when approached by Stuff - to confirm an Australia report that China was behind the espionage attacks on other "Five Eyes" countries dubbed "Operation Cloud Hopper".

"Huawei has always abided by applicable laws and regulations of the country where it is located... and requires all employees to abide by the country's laws and regulations", it said.

Bowater said he was aware of the situation in Poland, but it appeared the individuals' actions had no relation to the company.

Its chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou - the daughter of its founder - was arrested in Canada last month and faces extradition to the USA on charges of breaking Iran sanctions.

The Polish spy agency and Poland's state television, which is closely tied to the Polish government, reported the arrests and the searches at both Huawei and Orange.

Some European governments and telecom companies are following the USA lead in questioning whether using Huawei for vital infrastructure for mobile networks could leave them exposed to snooping by the Chinese government. He reportedly became the sales director of Huawei in Poland sometime in 2017 with an emphasis on sales "in the public sector".

Huawei is a large maker of smartphones and telecommunications equipment.

Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou (孟晚舟) was last month arrested in Canada on request from the USA, which suspects her of breaching Iranian sanctions.

Orange Polska's French parent company said this week it would no longer work with the Chinese company in France.

HEIGHTENED SCRUTINY Huawei has come under intense scrutiny in recent months as countries including Australia, New Zealand and Japan have followed US moves against the company, citing security concerns.

Huawei has previously said it does not pose a security threat and that it's never been asked by any government to build backdoors or interrupt any networks.

Following her arrest two Canadians were detained in China on grounds of national security, in what has largely been seen as retaliation for the case.
