Fund for French boxer who punched officers raises money, ire

11 January, 2019, 06:01 | Author: Rachael Silva
  • The former French boxing champion was filmed punching and kicking police officers

In another video, wearing a black hat and gloves, he kicks a police officer lying on the ground. The poll comes to light amid tensions over the so-called yellow vest movement, which has been protesting for eight consecutive Saturdays across the country calling for greater fiscal and social justice.

Some French social media users even claimed Dettinger should be cast in a spin-off of the Rocky franchise, a decades-old series of films about U.S. boxing champion Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone.

Christophe Dettinger turned himself in to police on Monday.

Last Saturday, protesters used a construction vehicle to smash open the doors of the building housing the ministry of government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux.

"Yellow vests, do not weaken!" By threatening the French financial system, protesters say, they want to peacefully force the government to pass their reforms.

"In France, as in Italy, politics has become deaf to the needs of citizens who have been kept out of the most important decisions affecting the people".

The move led to criticism from political leaders on the far right and radical left, who have encouraged demonstrators to continue taking to the streets.

Both developments - coinciding with separate concerns over a police officer's unpunished ill-treatment of a protester in the southern port of Toulon - highlight the increasing ugliness of unrest that began over fuel prices but have widened to a revolt against Mr Macron's economic policies.

Macron also announced 10 billion euros worth of measures to boost the purchasing power of French households.

A clip of him punching the officer, on the Léopold-Sédar-Senghor bridge which links the Tuileries gardens to the Musée d'Orsay, has been viewed millions of times.

The French boxing federation condemned the suspect's "shameful and unacceptable behavior" while Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu said he had not been a member of the boxing federation since 2013.

Dettinger's former coach, Jacky Trompesauce, had urged the father of three to give himself up to police earlier on Monday.

"Contributing to a fundraising kitty to support someone who attacked an officer is tantamount to being an accomplice to these grave acts of violence", said government junior minister Marlene Schiappa.

Two months on, the "yellow vest" movement which has no clear leader, is still posing a stern challenge to Macron, who is struggling to defuse public anger and meet protesters' requests, despite a series of concessions he made last month, including higher minimum wages and tax breaks.
