To recap, in late December Donald Trump said he would refuse to sign any spending bill from Congress that didn't include over $5 billion to put towards building a wall at the southern US border, effectively shutting down the USA government for the time being.

In a speech full of false claims and misleading statistics, Trump painted a portrait of a crisis at the US-Mexico border even as the rate of illegal immigration has steadily fallen over the years and in 2018 reached its lowest point in more than a decade. The address aired on all major broadcast and cable news networks, and it was immediately followed by a response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), in which Schumer referred to the President as governing "by temper tantrum".

"If the networks want to absolve themselves for giving Trump too much of a platform when he might tell lies or ramble in a screed, they will need to go back in time and not cover all of Trump's pre-presidential nomination campaign rallies wall to wall", said Ms. Bellantoni. Trump said in a meeting with Schumer and Pelosi in December that he would be "proud" to shut down the government over border security.

"She said no. And he just got up and said: 'Then we have nothing to discuss, ' and he just walked out".

The lack of progress in negotiations raises the prospect that Trump will declare a national emergency, a move that would bypass Congress and enable him to obtain funds from the Defense Department to build the wall. We believe in border security. She lamented the "collateral damage" to federal workers living paycheck to paycheck who may not be able to pay their bills as the shutdown drags on.

"America's heart broke the day after Christmas, when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien, who just came across the border", Donald Trump said in his address. It is the second longest government shutdown in US history. The president alleged that the Democrats in Congress had failed to acknowledge the crisis and refused to provide the border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect families and the nation.

During his successful run for the White House in 2016, Trump's most fervent supporters cheered his call for a wall that he said Mexico would pay for. "It is hard to argue this night was about anything other than pure politics - and the networks interrupted programming to accommodate it".

"Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders", Trump said. He suggested the issue could be resolved in a quick meeting, but past discussions at the White House have not ended the stalemate.

Trump gave a nine-minute prime-time address Tuesday night to make the case for his signature domestic policy idea, but made no concessions to opposition Democrats.

Pelosi noted that Trump had rejected bipartisan legislation to reopen the government agencies shuttered as a result of the fight over the wall.

"This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border", he added.
