  • Tennis Clinical Kei Nishikori into Brisbane International final

As the highest remaining seed in a high-quality draw in Brisbane after world No2 Rafael Nadal pulled out, Nishikori beat world No16, Daniil Medvedev, one of the brightest young prospects on the tennis scene, in a seesawing two hours, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Nishikori had not won a tournament since Memphis in 2016, and was hampered by a wrist injury the following year which forced a break from the 2018 tour.

"I feel nearly home there, so I hope I can do well, better than a quarter-final".

"This week was one of the best for me", Nishikori, who beat Denis Kudla, Grigor Dimitrov and Jeremy Chardy this week, said.

It came after Tsurenko rolled her ankle in the second game of the deciding set.

"The main goal is to do well in Australian Open, but I'm really happy that I've been playing really well this week", he said.

Russian Medvedev began strongly but, after clinching the opening three games, mistakes crept into his play and he lost six of the next seven to drop the opening set.

The world number nine will enter this month's Australian Open with increased confidence having put an end to a frustrating few years.

"So I had to start at some ATP Challenger Tour events", said Nishikori.

"And he did really well the last game, I mean the 4-3 game". Nishikori and Medvedev split their two FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings, with the Russian winning their most recent contest previous year in the Tokyo final.

Earlier, Karolina Pliskova won her second Brisbane title, beating Lesia Tsurenko 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 after coming within just two points of defeat. But then the ball wouldn't go in and then I would go back to being childish.

The 2017 Brisbane International victor claimed 14 of 15 points to force a deciding set, with Stubbs encouraging her to show more emotion.

"I think we had the great fight until 5-4, and then suddenly, I don't know, maybe she raised her level so much that I was not ready for that".

"This helpless feeling I have, I think today I learned what I have to do to, not fix it, but what I can do to improve the situation so there aren't many moments that I feel like that", the Japanese added.
