Elizabeth Warren Compares Scrutiny Of Her 'Native American Ancestry' To 'Birtherism'

Warren is the most prominent Democrat yet to make a move toward a presidential bid and has always been a favorite target of President Donald Trump.

Vice President Mike Pence administers a ceremonial Senate oath during a mock swearing-in ceremony to Sen.

She must also move past a widely panned October release of a DNA test meant to bolster her claim to Native American heritage.

But less than a week into the new year, Warren already flipped that on its head, becoming the first major candidate to land on the ground in the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus state, lapping up media attention, locking down key staff and organizers, and capitalizing on pent-up 2020 Democratic excitement.

"Washington keeps working great for people with money, but not for anyone else", Warren said to a round of applause at a packed theater in Sioux City, promising to "end lobbying as we know it".

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass, greets a supporter following an organizing event at McCoy's Bar Patio and Grill in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Friday, Jan. 4, 2019. "She's attracting high level campaign talent", Continetti said, and has offered the "most defined message of the candidates we're looking at right now on the left side, progressive left side". And then she said this, actually, though, more specifically about President Trump.

The announcement that Warren, a liberal from MA, will shut down the Elizabeth Warren Action Fund, came from her spokeswoman, Kristen Orthman.

The last two years under Donald Trump have created a sense of urgency for Democrats, said Troy Price, the chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Angela Nelson, 50, a special education teacher from Omaha, Nebraska, said she was concerned to see questions raised about Warren's likeability amid comparisons to Hillary Clinton, the unsuccessful 2016 Democratic nominee. Elizabeth Warren, who announced on Monday that she is exploring a presidential run, is quickly assembling a robust and experienced team to lead a campaign in Iowa - an early signal of the outsized importance of a strong showing in the state. "We're going to challenge you".

'I am not a citizen of a tribe, ' Warren told voters in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday. This included defending her brainchild, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and grilling titans like Wells Fargo CEO Timothy Sloan, who, she pointed out, got rich screwing low-level employees and consumers.

'Yes, you can!' an audience member said in response.

In more than a dozen interviews with self-described independents and Democrats at Warren events over the weekend, the issue of "electability" emerged as a common theme.

"He takes this government - and he's been pretty damn open about it - and he says this government works for the rich", Warren said. The first Democratic presidential debate is this June, however. But there's one thing I do know: I can't do this alone.

Iowa's caucuses, local political meetings held statewide and run by the party, are scheduled to begin the 2020 nominating campaign in February 2020.

The questioner, though, seemed less concerned about the offense the test caused to some Native Americans than its potential to fuel President Donald Trump's attacks.
