  • Texas Harris County Sheriff's Office releases composite sketch of 7-year-old's killer

Texas' Harris County Sheriff's Office released a composite sketch this week of a suspect wanted for the shooting death of seven-year-old Jazmine Barnes.

According to Houston ABC affiliate KTRK, the 20-year-old Black confessed to playing a role in the December 30 shooting, on Saturday night after a tip lead Harris County investigators to his arrest.

A tip from the public helped police identify Black, who is now in custody in East Harris County.

"Investigators do not believe Jazmine's family was the intended target of the shooting", the Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Jazmine was killed after a gunman fired into the auto that she was riding in with her mother and siblings at around 6:50 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

In an emotional speech, Jazmine's aunt, Sharonica Watt, asked her niece's killer why he took the little girl's life.

Jazmine, who was in second grade, had said she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up and was already practicing as she kept her 6-year-old sister in line.

"We do believe that it was racially motivated in part because our nation at this moment is a highly racially charged society".

It was not immediately known whether the suspected gunman has been arrested.

Hundreds of mourners gathered Saturday outside the Walmart near where Jazmine was killed.

The sheriff's office tweeted on Friday that investigators have received "many potential leads" since releasing the sketch but declined to comment on any specific tips.

"The detectives stopped by last night ... they said they had two guys and that the gentlemen were black", Washington told CNN affiliate KTRK. The shooting occurred as the family was heading to the store.

"The source said the suspects thought the complainant's vehicle was some other person's vehicle that they had seen earlier in the night and that they shot the auto by mistake", according to the complaint obtained by KPRC-TV.

Chris Sevilla said in a brief telephone interview Sunday he was feeling "a bit of relief" after an arrest in the slaying of his daughter, Jazmine Barnes. At the time, authorities had said it showed a white man in his 40s. Officials said Black later admitted to the shooting.

The killing prompted gestures of support, and more than $100,000 was raised for a reward in an effort spearheaded by civil rights activist Shaun King.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez has previously said that investigators believe the attack "was totally unprovoked".

Jazmine's funeral is being paid for by retired National Basketball Association superstar Shaquille O'Neal and veteran Houston Police officer Kenneth Miles. Her funeral is on Tuesday.
