  • Polish President Andrzej Duda called the fire a'crushing tragedy

This was followed by a statement from a fire spokesman, Tomasz Kubiak, who confirmed the deaths of the five teens and told AFP: "One man with severe burns was taken to an intensive care unit".

The five girls who died, all 15, were celebrating a friend's birthday when they visited the attraction. Prosecutors say a leaky gas container inside a heater is the most likely cause of the blaze.

Highly popular with teenagers across Poland, the "escape room" game involves players locked inside a room or building.

Autopsies showed the girls died of carbon monoxide asphyxiation, prosecutors said.

Escape room experiences have grown in popularity over the past few years, with more than 1,000 springing up in the United Kingdom since 2013 when there were just seven.

During a memorial Mass at Koszalin Cathedral, Bishop Edward Dajczak identified the girls by their first names as Julia, Amelia, Gosia, Karolina and Wiktoria.

Police and fire officials said they did not yet know what started the blaze in the escape room, which was reported early on Friday evening.

Kosiec said the bodies were found after firefighters put out a fire that broke out around 5 p.m.at the location.

"Security was not ensured and that led to the tragedy", Suski said.

The country's interior minister has ordered fire safety inspections at more than 1000 escape room locations across the country.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, along with Suski and Szymczyk, spoke after holding a meeting in which they discussed with other officials ways of improving safety at entertainment venues.

President Andrzej Duda tweeted a message of support to the families of the victims, calling it a "devastating tragedy".
