USA moving slowly on Syria troop withdrawal

  • Top Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway seemed to hint that the US president might be planning to tweak his blueprint for a troop withdrawal from Syria

According to a new report, President Trump is giving the US military four months to execute the withdrawal of the 2,000 United States troops in Syria roughly two weeks ago, when he reportedly told the Defense Department they had 30 days to pull out. "I didn't like the fact that they're selling the small oil that they have to Iran, and we asked them not to sell it to Iran".

In the past, Trump has said he has great admiration for the Kurds, describing them as great fighters. "But the goal has always been the same".

Asked about the timetable for withdrawing from Syria, Trump gave no specific timeline, but also did not back up claims made by Sen. The announcement also had shocked lawmakers and American allies, including Kurds who have fought alongside the USA against Isis and face an expected assault by Turkey.

The YPG seized Manbij from the Islamic State group in 2016 and U.S. forces have continued to support the Kurdish fighters in their battle against the jihadists.

"The last thing in the world we want is a war for Turkey and the Kurds", Graham said.

Later in the afternoon, Graham emerged from the White House meeting and said that Trump had promised to stay in Syria to finish the job of destroying IS - just days after announcing he would be withdrawing troops immediately. There is an argument that says we just pull up our stuff, go home, let the region run itself.

"He has not reversed his decision", Graham said. "The pause is to assess the effects of the conditions on the ground".

When Trump first ordered a drawdown within 30 days, his position provoked an outcry, including from some of his political allies like Graham, who said that such a hasty withdrawal would leave exposed USA partners such as the Kurds, who are concerned about a possible attack from Turkey.

"If anybody but Donald Trump did what I did in Syria, which was an ISIS loaded mess when I became President, they would be a national hero".

Islamic State, or ISIS, is "mostly gone", he said, and the USA is slowly pulling out, "while at the same time fighting ISIS remnants". The issue of the potential slaughter of those allies has been a point of contention even among Trump supporters in the days following his sudden announcement of the end of US intervention in the Syria conflict. "Now when I start getting out the Fake News Media, or some failed Generals who were unable to do the job before I arrived, like to complain about me & my tactics, which are working", Trump wrote on Twitter.

However, Trump modified that decision, following a December 26 visit to Iraq, where he was briefed by USA commanders, as Sen.

National security adviser John Bolton was expected to travel to Israel and Turkey next weekend to discuss the President's plans with the American allies. "Watch what happens because he's got plans and I won't get ahead of his announcement, but he did want me to convey that", she said on "Fox News Sunday".
