Donald Trump lacks character in leading 'divided nation', claims Mitt Romney

  • Mitt Romney: Trump's biggest failure is a lack of character in leading 'divided' nation

"After he became the nominee, I hoped his campaign would refrain from resentment and name-calling".

The former presidential candidate and incoming junior senator wrote that Trump has "not risen to the mantle" of the presidency and that the president's lack of character is his "most glaring" shortfall. These are policies mainstream Republicans have promoted for years.

In the op-ed, Romney said many of Trump's policies - on taxes, deregulation, confronting China on trade and appointing conservative judges - have been longtime Republican goals.

The column is titled "The president shapes the public character of the nation". He said a president must also demonstrate honesty and integrity and elevate the national discourse. As a nation, we have been blessed with presidents who have called on the greatness of the American spirit.

Now, this isn't nothing. So I'm hoping that Mitt will sit down with the president privately, share his concerns with the president about whatever drives his thinking but also commit to the president that I want you to be successful and I'm here to help you.

The question is: what kind of message does it send?

Romney will be sworn into the Senate on Thursday.

Romney pledged to act, as a senator, as he would "with any president", disregarding party lines, but warned that he would oppose "divisive, racist, sexist, anti-immigrant, dishonest or destructive" statements and actions, in an apparent nod at Donald Trump's flamboyant rhetoric. "I don't think you're going to be able to reinvent yourself in the same way now. post-Trump world is an entirely different ball of wax".

And that's the message that this sends.

Graham advised Romney that Trump is "the easiest guy in Washington to get a hold of".

Romney responded, "Thank you Mr. President for the support". Flake has also been on the receiving end of many of Trump's tweets for his refusal to vote with the GOP on many issues.

"Why doesn't [Obama] show his birth certificate? "So sad, I wish everyone had the courage" Trump? had".

"She has a right to express her opinion", he said. 'I think it's early to make that decision.

President Trump and his team accused Romney of lashing out now because he is bitter that his 2012 presidential bid failed where Trump's 2016 campaign succeeded. "People are very upset with what he did", Trump said.

Now in 2019, he's supposedly anxious again.

Romney attacked Trump's foreign policy decisions as risky for America's moral leadership in the world.

Some analysts have speculated that Romney's Senate seat could set him up for another presidential run, possibly as soon as 2020, when Trump will seek re-election.

"We don't normally comment on op-eds from other senators", Lee spokesman Conn Carroll said in an email.

Utah Sen. -elect Mitt Romney says President Donald Trump's "conduct over the past two years.is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office".

Romney wrote in Tuesday's op-ed that he agreed with some of the policy changes Trump has championed. "And we'll see whether someone else does in a Republican primary or not".

Jeff Flake, a frequent critic of the president.

But he stopped short of saying he agrees with the president that taking a hard line with Democrats in Congress is worth putting 780,000 federal workers at risk of missing paychecks in nine days.

But even the op-ed was a step down from the March 2016 speech in which he front-loaded a sneer onto a script full of venom.

'I haven't decided who I'm going to endorse in 2020.
