Netflix's 'Bird Box' Hits Record-Breaking 45 Million Accounts in First Week

Netflix has never been one to share much information about their viewing metrics however, and details are still sparse about what counts as a "view" for the feature film (it's unclear if accounts had to watch the entire film for it to be a view, or if only part of the film has to be seen).
And is there any way to say what portion of that audience would make the effort of going to a theater and buying a ticket to "Bird Box"? That number could be significantly higher considering friends and family may have watched the show together. It made someone refer to star Sandra Bullock as the "lady from Bird Box, " causing everyone who would instead refer to her as the lady from Speed (and, you know, everything else) to feel like a fossil.
Shares of Netflix are up 33% YTD. Since its premiere on December 21, the original drama has been viewed by over 45 million accounts, the company reports.
According to Netflix, Bird Box is one of its biggest instant hits, with more than 45 million accounts streaming the film within seven days of release.
Netflix has about 137 million subscribers worldwide (as of October), about 57 percent of them in the United States. For example, the 45 million figure doesn't identify exactly how many people watched the film. We see the outline of four or five people but two in particular stand out as you'll see below in an Instagrampost from Schulman.
If you have already seen the movie you would be forgiven for missing a brief "cameo" appearance from Catfish host Nev Schulman and his wife Laura Perlongo. Given that the streaming giant nearly never reveals any numbers, it's a surprising reveal, but one, given the proliferation of Bird Box memes online, that seems to make sense.
Being clear-eyed about Netflix's Twitter brags doesn't mean that we have to be unimpressed with Bird Box's success.
