'RIP Instagram:' Unpopular Update Outrages Social Media Users

  • Instagram releases major update to feed, users trash it on Twitter and the update disappears

Instagram sent shocvk waves through the mobile world this morning after it started testing a horizontal scrolling main feed for its app.

Users who were updated to the new feature got a message from Instagram that informed them about the new change in the way they use the app. "This was caused by a bug and we quickly rolled it back", an Instagram spokesperson told the site.

Twitter user Jeffree Star lamented "this #instagramupdate nearly ruined my morning!" while journalist Alex Heath of the online service Cheddar remarked that it "seems maybe meant to reduce mindless vertical scrolling?" If you're still seeing it simply restart the app.

Folks behind the Facebook-owned mobile app apologized for the design change and blamed it on a "bug", although some users remain skeptical.

Many Instagram users woke up to a drastically different layout for the app Thursday - and weren't too happy about it.

What did you think of Instagram's temporary scrolling update? It also asked the users to tap through to see their feed. Only the username and media are visible at first glance - you have to tap it to see the caption, number of likes, and any comments. And strangely, in my experience, the change seemed to de-prioritize posts from friends, while sponsored posts, celebrities, and "influencers" got more screen time.

"Not to be dramatic but this new Instagram update is the worst thing that's ever happened to me", one said.

Instagram has not publicly announced the change, and Instagram users at Business Insider with both iPhone and Android devices have not received the update.

Instagram users were up in arms after the photo- and video-sharing platform dropped another seemingly unwanted and unannounced update. #InstagramUpdate became one of the top trending Twitter trends in the UK.
