The snow will become lighter Friday and taper off west to east.

The Minnesota State Patrol tweeted that road conditions are poor across much of western Minnesota.

While a rain and snow mix is possible Monday night from a separate, smaller system, the biggest danger to the traveling public overnight into Tuesday morning will be the potential for dense fog.

There is a slight chance for a snow shower on Friday across the Front Range and a 2-6 inches of snow south of Interstate 70 in the mountains on Thursday night into Friday. Grand Forks is expected to see another 2-3 inches, while Fosston, Minn. could get 8-12 more inches.

Several communities in this zone may be hit with enough freezing rain to cause tree limbs to collapse and regional power outages to occur.

Severe storms will move through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama by 7 p.m. on Thursday. Kalin says it could deliver more than eight inches of snow to some locations. Strong northeasterly winds with gusts to 60 km/h may reduce visibility at times.

This year, Christmas Day had temperatures change little from the daytime high of 26 degrees to the overnight low of 22 degrees.

Unsafe conditions are expected across the western and central parts of the state, with the National Weather Service predicting up to a foot of snow in some areas. The very cold air could return next week as well. Parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and Kansas were getting a slew of weather warnings, watches and advisories. If roads are packed with snow, drivers should stay put.

Travel conditions will depend upon whether the wind has kept crews from clearing roads.

Temperatures are expected to plummet overnight, with temperatures beginning in the upper 20s or low 30s and falling from there.
