Apple Acknowledges But Play Down ‘Bent’ iPad Pro Units

  • Apple says some 2018 iPad Pros ship with a bent body, but claims this is normal

Last month, YouTube channel JerryRigEverything showed the iPad Pro's apparent lack of durability when he snapped it in half with his hands. However, consumers are not so happy about the bend in their expensive new iPad Pro.

Apple also attributed the bend to be due to the manufacturing process and specifically to the cooling system employed in the tablet.

The problem is apparently present in brand new iPad Pro devices too, with some devices exhibiting a more pronounceable bend than others. Now, Apple has confirmed to The Verge that some iPad Pros are shipping with a very slight bend in the aluminum chassis and it's not a defect. This isn't mere speculation, either - Apple has confirmed that some units do indeed feature a slight bend in the aluminum chassis. Why would it allow something as unsightly as a bend to infect its high-end iPad Pro? Interestingly, Tim Cook's company does not consider the bend a sign of defect.

The problem first arose when MacRumors' forum lit up with reports from concerned iPad Pro owners who had recently purchased the new Apple tablet.

"I have an approx 1in spot on my iPad Pro screen which is brighter than the rest of the screen - it's unevenly lit". It seems to be purely a cosmetic slip-up, which might not be a big deal in and of itself, but this is Apple, a company infamous for being bullish on design. Unlike the infamous "bendgate" issue with the iPhone 6 generation iPhones, this also affects both sizes of device - rather than just the larger one.

It remains to be seen how many more buyers react to Apple's confirmation about the bend being normal.
