President Donald Trump tweeted Friday that Comey was apparently told by Justice Department attorneys not to answer some questions.

James Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director fired by President Donald Trump a year ago, testified Friday behind closed doors to a Republican-led congressional committee looking into Hillary Clinton's emails.

Republican lawmakers who stepped outside while the questioning was underway indicated they weren't satisfied and might try to bring him back another day.

"I'm not sure we needed to do this at all", Comey said after exiting his interview with the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees.

Comey said he will be back at the Capitol for another closed-door interview the week of December 17.

Comey was in charge of both of those investigations.

Comey buckled over the weekend, announcing he would appear following assurances that a full transcript would get released and he could speak about what he had testified. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi of IL said, "He answered the questions he had to answer", adding that he was left with the impression that "we got nowhere today".

President Donald Trump has started what is expected to be a busy day for special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation by launching a Twitter broadside against the prosecutor and his team.

"This is a waste of time to start with", he said.

The Republican-led committee has said it wanted to interview Comey as part of its investigation into FBI actions during the 2016 presidential election.

"Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., told reporters that some lawmakers have been frustrated with the testimony so far and that Comey didn't seem upset about being told by his lawyers that he doesn't have to answer certain questions", writes Fox News.

As special counsel Robert Mueller prepares to reveal more details about his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election in the face of filing deadlines, President Trump is unleashing a barrage of tweets aimed at everyone from Mueller to former FBI director James Comey to former Justice Department officials.

Mueller took over the department's investigation when he was appointed in May 2017 by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein just days after Comey's firing.

The committee had subpoenaed Comey, and he initially went to court to fight it.

"The entire objective of this investigation is to be a diversion of the real investigation, which is Mueller".

Three months earlier the president met privately with Comey and urged him to end the investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn, a move that many Democrats interpreted as an obstruction of justice.
