Her relative lack of experience for a high-stakes foreign relations position means that Democrats are likely to press Nauert on her qualifications during her confirmation hearings, according to CNN.

Haley surprised White House officials in October when she said she would resign by the end of year, citing the need for a break after two terms as governor and two years at the UN. Nauert was then appointed acting undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs and was for a time the highest-ranking woman and fourth highest-ranking official in the building. With a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, she had moved to Fox from ABC News, where she was a general assignment reporter.

"She's going to work with Nikki Haley to replace Nikki at the United Nations", Trump told reporters at the White House Friday.

Overnight she took charge of overseeing communication from USA diplomatic missions around the world as well as countering propaganda from the Islamic State movement and other foreign adversaries.

United Nations diplomats say that behind the scenes negotiations are central to an ambassador's job, and that presentation skills are also important.

Mr. Trump told The Washington Times in an interview last month that Ms. Nauert was "under strong consideration" for the post, but he was evaluating other candidates.

While Nauert must still be confirmed by the US Senate, Benjamin said she will easily get the approval of the Republican-controlled chamber.

Trump's announcement comes just a day after the US lost a high-profile vote in the U.N. General Assembly for a resolution condemning the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Although some have speculated that Haley may challenge Mr. Trump in 2020, Haley has said that she will support the president. He elevated her to under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, a job vacated by Steve Goldstein who was sacked along with Tillerson.

But Bruen, who now heads the Global Situation Room consulting firm, questioned whether Nauert was the best pick when "American influence on the world stage is at a historic low".

Praise for the appointment came from Israel, which has long counted on the United States to veto unfriendly resolutions on the UN Security Council. In 2017, when asked by The Washington Post about political donations made by lawyers on the special counsel's team, Barr said that "prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party", and added, "I would have liked to see [Mueller] have more balance on this group".

"With Pompeo more firmly in control and Bolton focused on his anti-multilateral agenda, there's a sense the United States ambassador will have less clout", Gowan said.
