Marine Corps officials confirmed the incident but offered little information in a statement.

A search is under way for crew members from two Marine Corps planes involved in what the military called a "mishap" off the coast of Japan. A Japanese government official said the person, rescued by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, is in a stable condition.

Japanese and USA officials say two American warplanes crashed into the Pacific Ocean off Japan's southwestern coast after a midair collision early Thursday, and search and rescue operations are underway.

United States media also reported 5 crew on the C-130 and 2 on the F-18. The status of the other Marines was not immediately available.

Two United States Marine aircraft are reported to have crashed off the coast of Japan today.

The rescued crew member was taken to the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in western Japan, the Marines said.
