US Secretary of Defense: Vladimir Putin is "slow learner"

  • The Russian President Vladimir Putin

Such an opinion during the California Security Forum was expressed by US Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Reuters reports. He recognizes that what he does is actually creates hostility against his people.

In his remarks, Mattis also highlighted Russia's recent aggression in the Kerch Strait with the seizure and detention of two dozen Ukrainian sailors and acknowledged that "there is no doubt" that the U.S. -Russia relationship has worsened.

Mattis said the Trump administration and other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have pressed Russian Federation repeatedly on un-democratic actions, but to no avail.

Russia said the Ukrainian ships had breached the Russian border and conducted unsafe movements in spite of Russia's orders.

Mattis also asserted that Russian Federation had interfered in the November midterm elections for Congress, though he gave no details nor provided any further evidence.

"We are dealing with someone that we simply can not trust, he said, noting that Russia's "actions speak louder than words". He stressed that Russian Federation tried to interfere in mid-term elections in the U.S. last month - the same as it did in 2016, but the American authorities will take all necessary to continue to reliably protect our democracy.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Saturday confirmed Trump's encounter with Putin in Argentina in a statement, saying, "As is typical at multilateral events, President Trump and the first lady had a number of informal conversations with world leaders at the dinner last night, including President Putin". He added more generally, "It's his efforts to try to subvert democratic processes that must be defended".

"Mr. Putin clearly comes tight".

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday said the Ukraine events were the only reason Trump canceled his planned formal meeting with Putin in Argentina, not developments in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.
