A federal judge heard arguments from both sides on Friday, the day after Comey's legal filing. "So will sit in the dark, but Republicans agree I'm free to talk when done and transcript released in 24 hours", Comey tweeted.

Comey said the compromise is the closest he will get to a public testimony.

Comey also moved on Sunday to withdraw his motion to quash the congressional subpoena and said the hearing scheduled for Monday morning on the matter does not need to happen.

The Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep.

The testimony will center on an investigation by Goodlatte and other House Republicans into the FBI and Justice Department's handlings of probes into former Secretary of State's Hillary Clinton's email practices and Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The committee will give Comey a full transcript of that testimony within 24 hours, which he is free to make public.

Former FBI Director James Comey said Sunday that he has reached an agreement with Republican lawmakers regarding his testimony about the agency's actions ahead of the 2016 USA presidential election.

Comey agreed to sit down for a closed-door deposition on Friday.

"I have just offered to Director Comey that the Committees will publicly release the transcript of his testimony following the interview for our investigation".

Trump fired Comey a year ago on the grounds that Comey had mishandled the Clinton case, with both then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein sending memos expressing agreement with the decision. He also predicted Comey would be making the rounds on television news and discussing his testimony in detail. And it says he was "personally involved" with the Russian Federation probe and "signed off" on the surveillance warrant for Trump advisor Carter Page, who came under scrutiny for his Russian Federation ties during the campaign.

Under the agreement, Comey will withdraw his legal motion and the committee will withdraw its subpoena, according to the report.

Mr Comey tweeted: "Grateful for a fair hearing from judge".

But the hearing is one of several planned by House Republicans in the lame duck session, before Democrats assume the House majority in January, which will focus on the activities and investigations of Clinton.
