  • South Korea to send trains to North Korea in joint survey to connect railways separated since Korean War

The president tells reporters that there are three sites under consideration, but he's not identifying them.

"We're getting along very well. We have a good relationship", Trump said of Kim, according to the report.

Talks on a follow-up to the two leaders' first meeting in June in Singapore have been underway since July, a senior USA official told Reuters in October.

On Friday, Trump discussed the situation with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

The Seoul government is sticking to its plan to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for inter-Korean railway and road connection projects this year as agreed upon by their leaders in September.

Last month, Vice President Mike Pence said Trump would push for a concrete plan outlining Pyongyang's moves to end its arms programs. Discussions to determine the location of the second rendezvous are ongoing.

South Korean authorities plan to question the defector over the details of his escape.

Complications: The Washington Post reported that in order for the trip to happen, South Korea had to receive special permission from the United Nations due to sanctions that are now in place on North Korea.

After Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June, negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang have stalled due to differences on the scale of denuclearization, USA sanctions, and whether to issue a war-ending declaration, among others. - But differences have emerged between Washington and Seoul on how to proceed with Kim, as the dovish Moon has long favored engagement with the North.

Through Dec. 5, the South Koreans will team up with North Korean officials and experts to look at 400 kilometers of tracks along the western coast from Kaesong, just north of the inter-Korean border, all the way up to Sinuiju, near the border separating North Korea and China.

They have also begun work to reconnect a train line and fix another rail link across the border.

Despite the warming ties, it remains unclear whether Kim will make his first-ever visit to the South this year, as Seoul is hoping. While the U.S. insists on allowing inspectors to verify Pyongyang's commitment to the agreement, North Korea wants Washington to act in good faith and lift some of the sanctions.

At Dorasan, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Kim Hyun-mee said "Today's ceremony will be a flare that signals the beginning of co-prosperity of the South and North, and will become a catalyst that expands the economic boundaries of the Korean Peninsula, which was isolated like an island, to Eurasia".
