  • LUNAR DREAMS Cambridge-based Draper has already worked with NASA on moon research and travel and hopes to do so once again

The companies will bid on contracts to deliver science and technology payloads to enable humans to travel back to the moon, and eventually on to Mars.

Those companies are Astrobotic, Deep Space Systems, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, Lockheed Martin, Mastern Space Systems, Moon Express, Draper and Orbit Beyond. They can do this through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) contract.

Nonetheless, the Russians are not talking about lunar exploration but about a Moon colony which would mean people living on the Earth's natural satellite for long periods, which is somewhat different from what NASA has in mind at the moment and more similar to what Elon Musk and SpaceX have in plan for Mars. Of the company considered only if they agreed to deliver the first mission until the end of 2021, in connection with NASA about the proposals earlier this year.

In December 2017, President Donald Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1, ordering NASA to "refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery". This includes encouraging private investment where possible and shifting sights to lunar science, including the Gateway Lunar Orbital Platform and a human return to the Moon in the short term. The last time humans visited the moon was in 1972, during NASA's Apollo 17 mission. The new space station would orbit the moon.

Musk's brief hit of a joint offered to him by Joe Rogan in a video broadcast on YouTube on September 6 "was not appropriate", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told reporters at a news briefing in Washington Thursday, according to a report in Fortune. There was President Trump's Space Policy Directive One for one, and the involvement of both commercial and worldwide partners.

Moon Express, a privately funded US commercial space company founded in 2010 with the goal of providing low cost, frequent access to the Moon for science, exploration and commerce while seeking new resources to benefit Earth.

NASA officials say the goal of the planned spaceflight is to transport equipment for performing experiments and collecting information about the moon.

The last US mission to the moon was Apollo 17 in 1972.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of when U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon.

As per the head designer at Russia's space program, Yevgeny Mikrin, working on this project could begin by 2025.

Nine astronauts will fly the first four crewed missions inside SpaceX and Boeing's new spaceships for NASA, called Crew Dragon and CST-100 Starliner, respectively.

After safely landing on Mars following its almost seven month journey, NASA has released the first pictures taken by its InSight spacecraft, which has opened it solar arrays to charge batteries.
