Justin Trudeau Urged By Ukrainian Officials To Speak Out Against Russia

  • Ukraine’s new front is Europe’s big challenge

President Petro Poroshenko said that the one-month period of martial law introduced this week in Ukraine wouldn't restrict travel, cash withdrawals or currency purchases by Ukrainians but Russians will face some constraints.

Ukraine's president has warned that Russian tanks are massing along the border hours after accusing Russia's Vladimir Putin of wanting to annex his whole country.

"Citizens of the Russian Federation aged from 16 to 60 years old are not allowed to pass, male persons", said Petro Tsigikal, the head of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Thus, both sides perceive the Strait as an important key structure. "But I would like to assure you that I am part of the holy church and I do not recognize any other church", Father Pavlo said, speaking by the ornate gilded altar at one of the monastery's cathedrals.

Andrew Wilson, professor of Ukrainian Studies at University College London in the United Kingdom, told Newsweek that Ukraine's official explanation for the new rules "is sound", saying the move was intended "to stop "little green men" appearing, or 'polite people, '" using some of the nicknames given to the advance Russian troops in Crimea. We do this partly within the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation framework, but also some Allies provide some direct support on the bilateral level and we support and encourage that. Ukraine insisted its vessels were operating in line with global maritime rules in the strait, which separates Russia's mainland and the Crimean Peninsula that it annexed from Ukraine in 2014. Meanwhile the Russians claimed that Ukraine illegally entered its waters.

Separately, a Reuters correspondent in Crimea on Wednesday observed a Russian navy minesweeper ship, the Vice-Admiral Zakharin, heading for the Sea of Azov.

The vessels were blocked from leaving the Sea of Azov via the Kerch Strait by a Russian tanker parked under the new Crimean Bridge.

As earlier reported, on November 25, Russian border guards detained the Yany Kapu tugboat and two small-sized Berdiansk and Nikopol armored artillery boats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Navy, sailing from Odesa to Mariupol via the Black and Azov Seas, near the Kerch Strait.

Russia's foreign ministry responded to the temporary ban on Friday, criticizing Ukraine leadership and saying it would not reciprocate.

The move comes after Kiev imposed martial law in border regions this week over the seizure.

Russian military officials said Wednesday that Moscow would soon deploy more of its advanced S-400 air defence systems in Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. In practical terms it could easily block the Kerch Strait as it did earlier this week by placing a merchant vessel across the channel. In May this year, Russian Federation effectively took control of the Kerch Strait, which ships must pass through to reach the Black Sea from the Sea of Azoz, by building a bridge across it too low for large vessels to clear underneath.

On Wednesday the European Union strongly condemned Russia's actions but failed to agree on new sanctions against Russian Federation.

Poroshenko also said that Russian President Vladimir Putin has found himself "in total isolation" after US President Donald Trump announced that he would cancel his meeting with the Russian leader at this week's G20 summit unless Putin released the Ukrainian soldiers.

Russian warships fired at the Ukrainian vessels and rammed the tug.

Russia's government-appointed ombudsman for Crimea told Russian news agencies that all the seamen have been transported from a detention centre in Crimea.

"Moscow will certainly do everything to abide by conventions on diplomatic relations and protect Ukraine's diplomatic facilities in our country", she said.
