Michael Cohen reportedly reaches new plea deal with Mueller

In doing so, he said that Trump told him to arrange payments, before the 2016 election, to buy the silence of adult film actress Stormy Daniels and a former Playboy model who allege they had affairs with Trump.

Giuliani also is criticizing the timing of Cohen's guilty plea, saying it's "hardly coincidental" it comes as Trump is heading to the G-20 summit with world leaders in Argentina.

Cohen, who now says he is putting his "family and country first", agreed at the time to cooperate with Mueller - even though the eight charges he pleaded guilty to stemmed from a separate investigation conducted by NY investigators working under referral from the special counsel. Trump calls Cohen a "weak person" who's "lying" to get a reduced sentence. "This was a project that we didn't do, I didn't do".

However, Trump maintained that "there would've been nothing wrong if I did do it".

Trump later reiterated his disparagement of Cohen: "What he's trying to do - because he's a weak person and not a very smart person".

The proposal at issue was to build a skyscraper bearing Trump's name in the Russian capital, a project that ultimately did not materialise.

"I'm the guy who stops the leaks", Cohen said in an interview a year ago with Vanity Fair.

Congress isn't done with Michael Cohen.

Trump said he ultimately decided not to pursue a real estate project in Russian Federation, but it isn't clear precisely how discussions ended over the notional Trump Tower in Moscow.

Cohen, who initially told Congress the discussions ended in January 2016, admitted today during a surprise court appearance in NY that those talks continued until June of that year. Some of those contacts were first reported by The Washington Post.

The incoming chair of the panel, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., told reporters on Thursday morning that in the wake of Cohen's guilty plea, "we believe other witnesses were untruthful before our committee".

"Cohen discussed the status and progress of the Moscow Project with Individual 1 on more than the three occasions Cohen claimed to the committee, and he briefed family members of Individual 1 within the Company about the project", according to the information.

But the most recent news from the investigation suggests that Mueller, a cagey former FBI director, is holding back and could have more shocks in store for the U.S. leader as he nears the conclusion of the 18-month-old investigation.

Cohen admitted Thursday he made the false statements about the project to be "consistent" with the president's "political message".

It is unclear at the moment whether Cohen's guilty plea will result in him cooperating with federal authorities, particularly in relation to the Russian meddling investigation. The former Trump campaign chairman denies that he lied.

The developments come as Trump continues nearly daily attacks, via Twitter, on Mueller's ongoing investigation of his alleged campaign's links to Russian Federation and whether Trump, as president, obstructed justice in an effort to thwart the probe. Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced December 12. "Downing's discussions with the president's team violated no laws, they helped contribute to a deteriorating relationship between lawyers for Mr. Manafort and Mr. Mueller's prosecutors, who accused Mr. Manafort of holding out on them despite his pledge to assist them in any matter they deemed relevant".

Cohen has previously pleaded guilty to tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions (also connected to Trump), but he has not yet been sentenced. He told the court he had arranged those payments, created to keep the women quiet before the presidential vote, at Trump's direction.

"Yes, [Cohen] pled guilty to those eight counts, but he has not had a cooperation agreement with prosecutors in the southern district".
