The reports, from the Jackson Free Press, an independent newspaper in MS, and CNN, are the latest to bring up Mississippi's racist history ahead of a tense runoff election between Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy, who is vying to become the state's first African-American in the Senate since the Reconstruction. Many have taken the remark to be inappropriate due to Mississippi's history of racial violence.

Mississippi Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (left) received a $5,000 campaign donation from Major League Baseball. The state leadership is also firmly in GOP hands, with the governor, the state House, and the state Senate all controlled by the GOP. It says that with "great pride", MS lawmakers "join the Sons of Confederate Veterans" to honor Pharr. Trump said she made it somewhat "in jest" and that she felt bad about it.

A Democrat running for U.S. Senate in MS says he would bring experience of "diversity" and "inclusion" to the job, and he thinks the Republican he's trying to unseat has a background lacking in those qualities. At the time, Johnson said he didn't realize that's what the group was doing.

The concurrent resolution was approved by Mississippi's House and Senate.

Trump defended Hyde-Smith Monday. She was a Democrat before switching parties in 2010, citing her conservative beliefs.

CBS News and other reporters on Sunday asked Hyde-Smith for comment on these recent reports.

Cindy Hyde-Smith has drawn scrutiny for saying at a November 2 campaign event that she would attend a public hanging if invited. Trump, who will attend rallies for Hyde-Smith this week in Tupelo and Biloxi, continues to have very strong approval ratings in Mississippi.

Hyde-Smith has drawn fire for attending a white private school that was founded after court-ordered school desegregation of public schools.

Hyde-Smith has apologized to "anyone that was offended" by the hanging comment, saying she meant no ill will.

MLB's donation was made on Friday, three weeks after her campaign comment. Hyde-Smith is the first woman to represent MS in Congress. The Washington Post reported that in 2001, Hyde-Smith introduced a bill as a state senator to rename a stretch of highway to what it had been called in the 1930s: the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway, after the president of the Confederacy. Trump has previously thanked Hyde-Smith for voting for "our Agenda in the Senate 100% of the time". She wrote: "Mississippi history at its best!"

MS still displays the Confederate battle flag within its state flag.

Hyde-Smith and Espy debated Tuesday night. Hyde-Smith, a Republican, is running against Democrat Mike Espy in a run-off election on Tuesday for a U.S. Senate seat. Google, which donated $5,000 to Hyde-Smith, said in a statement to the Daily Dot that it does not "condone these remarks and would not have made such a contribution had we known about them", but would not say whether it would revoke the donation.
