Three US service members were killed Tuesday by an improvised explosive device near the city of Ghazni, Afghanistan, the US military announced.

Three other US service members were wounded along with a USA military contractor, they added. The condition of the wounded was not known, but they are receiving medial care.

"In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service members killed in action are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete", officials said.

He said US Special Forces had been conducting operations with Afghan forces around Ghazni city since Monday.

The city, which sits on the main highway linking the capital Kabul with Kandahar in the south, was overrun this year by a large Taliban force before it was driven off by Afghan and USA troops after days of heavy fighting. The two districts, which are predominantly comprised of Hazara populations, were considered to be the most secure rural districts in all of the country.

The city was overrun by a large Taliban force earlier this year before being driven off by Afghan and USA forces after days of heavy fighting. "It gives you an idea just how much of a load of this fight is being carried by the Afghan army", he said.

Resolute Support believes the soldiers was accidentally killed by an Afghan soldier in close quarters combat "during an assault on one of multiple barricaded al Qaeda shooters".

"Sgt. Jasso was killed defending our nation, fighting al Qaeda alongside our Afghan partners", he added. Brent Taylor was shot dead in an insider attack in Kabul. Of those, 12 were combat fatalities, the most in a single year since the end of 2014, when most global combat troops were withdrawn from the country.

The latest deaths come just days after a US soldier was killed in a firefight with Al Qaeda forces Saturday, defense officials told Fox News.

Jasso, a member of the elite Rangers who was on his third deployment to Afghanistan, was accidentally shot by an Afghan partner force during a battle with al-Qaeda, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission announced Tuesday.
