Theresa May under pressure after Gove rejects Brexit Secretary job

  • Conservative MP turns on Theresa May during Prime Minister's Questions

Arch Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg submitted a letter of no-confidence seeking the ousting of Prime Minister Theresa May.

"This is not the deal the country was promised, And Parliament can not and I believe will not accept a false choice between this bad deal and no deal", he said.

"And the alternative of repudiating that backstop would not only mean reneging on a promise to the people of Northern Ireland but it would also collapse the negotiations and end hopes of securing a deal".

In a sign of Mrs May weakness, Brexiter Environment Secretary Michael Gove was offered the Brexit Secretary's job but refused to take unless there was a change in her plans.

Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey followed Raab out the door.

Asked if she would allow her next Brexit Secretary to rewrite the deal, she said Mr Gove was doing an excellent job is his current position.

Dominic Raab resigned as Brexit secretary on Thursday morning, telling BBC News he quit the cabinet over "fatal flaws" in the draft agreement. Sterling dropped 1.1% to 1.28 USA dollars and was 1.2% lower at 1.13 euros.

British politicians in favor of leaving the European Union have criticized the agreement reached Tuesday after more than a year and a half of negotiations.

News that a deal had been struck after a year and a half of negotiations was welcomed in Brussels, and European Union chief Donald Tusk called for a November 25 summit of leaders so they can rubber-stamp the agreement.

"I understand fully that there are some who are unhappy with those compromises but this deal delivers what people voted for and it is in the national interest", she said.

She also raised the risk of "no Brexit at all", a warning likely intended for her eurosceptic MPs but which was seized upon with enthusiasm by campaigners for a second referendum.

But May's chances of getting her deal through Parliament before the United Kingdom leaves the bloc on March 29 appeared to be shrinking.

"But between the warring factions inside her party and the hardline [Democratic Unionist Party], May can not get her deal through parliament", the petition notes.

Speaking before a hostile parliament after several ministers quit on Thursday, the leader of Britain's Conservative party told legislators "the choice is clear".

Tory MP Mark Francois said, with Labour, the SNP, the Lib Dems and the DUP planning to vote against it - alongside, he said, more than 80 Tory MPs, it was "mathematically impossible to get this deal through the House of Commons" and it was "dead on arrival".

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called it a "botched deal". If anyone would be so stupid as to sign such a document and I'm pretty sure that the Parliament will not accept it for a variety of reasons.

Ian Blackford, who heads the Scottish National Party in Parliament, said the deal was "dead on arrival" and urged May to stop the countdown clock to Britain's exit, less than five months away. My Right Honorable Friend says that we would be out of the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice - Article 174 says otherwise. "Stop the clock and go back to Brussels".

Following an early Thursday meeting, Tusk heaped praise on the EU's Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, who had "achieved the two most important objectives" - limiting the damage caused by Britain's impending departure and maintaining the interests of the other 27 countries that will remain in the bloc after Brexit.

"We are calling for a meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee to enable us to discuss the details of the withdrawal agreement and to input into the political declaration before this is finalised".

Allies of Theresa May have launched a desperate bid to woo rebel Tory MPs by floating the prospect of a better deal on Brexit, HuffPost UK has learned.

Supporters of Brexit admit there may be some short-term pain for Britain's $2.9 trillion economy, but say that, in the long term, it will prosper when cut free from the EU - which they cast as a failing German-dominated experiment in European integration.
