Protesters in downtown Rockford decry Trump's move to replace Sessions

  • In U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday Democrats took control of the House of Representatives while Republicans held the Senate

"The president's dismissal of Attorney General Sessions, and his appointment of Whitaker, who is a complete political lackey, is a real threat to the integrity of that investigation", Nadler said.

But his departure was anticipated since early this year, after he endured withering and repeated criticism from the president over the legally troubled ban on Muslim travellers Trump sought when he came into office, and over the Mueller probe.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that if Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker does not recuse himself from oversight of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe, then Democrats will seek to tie protections for the investigation into the spending bill. That contradicted Trump's remarks on Fox News last month, when he called Whitaker "a great guy" and said, "I mean, I know Matt Whitaker". Later in the day, Trump tweeted that he did not know Whitaker personally, but several Republican leaders in Iowa respected him.

Watch more from Dershowtiz above. Under former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the investigation was overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

The email was sent past year by an Federal Bureau of Investigation victims' specialist to someone who the newspaper says was an alleged victim of the company, World Patent Marketing Inc., on which Whitaker served as an advisory board member. Whitaker voiced doubts about the scope and direction of the Russian Federation probe and suggested a future attorney general might put the brakes on Mueller by cutting off funding for the investigation. He also told the network that he could envision a scenario where Sessions is replaced with an attorney general who "reduces [Mueller's] budget so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt". If you don't think Mueller expected a move like this from Trump post-midterms, you don't know Robert Mueller. McConnell said that's not needed because the probe will be allowed to finish.

Even as Trump seems to be distancing himself from Whitaker, two Republicans close to the president said Trump had enjoyed Whitaker's TV appearances and the two had struck a bond.

The president was not happy to receive a question about George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway who wrote a scathing op-ed on Thursday that called Trump's appointment of Whitaker unconstitutional.

"The left is trying to sow this theory that essentially Russians interfered with the United States election, which has been proven false", he said on the Chosen Generation Radio Show in March 2017, in contradiction of the conclusion of the entire USA intelligence apparatus, some of which he would oversee as acting attorney general.

McConnell also echoed Trumps' warnings on investigations, saying: "The Democrats in the House will have to decide just how much presidential harassment they think is good strategy". Protestors anxious Whitaker would use his new position to stifle the investigation before its conclusion.

"Mueller was not Senate confirmed", the president fumed. Such a dramatic step is sure to trigger a fight between Congress and the executive branch about access to what Mueller has so far found, he said.

Whitaker has told associates that under his leadership the Justice Department won't cut the budget for Mueller's investigation, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday.

Adding to the concerns of Democrats is Whitaker's ties to a witness in the Mueller investigation: Sam Clovis.

On Friday as he left for Paris, the president dismissed the argument that Whitaker's past comments might disqualify him from overseeing the special counsel.
