  • Democrats and Republicans warn White House against impeding Russia inquiry as Trump replaces Sessions with ally

One organizer for Capital Area Indivisible, Jessica Gorton of Readfield, has helped organize other area events for the group, including the 2017 Women's March.

He also warned of a "warlike" response if the Democrats tried to bring forward more investigations into him.

"There is a lot to fight against with this administration; both the president himself, but also the people he has appointed", she said.

He called Whitaker as "highly thought of" but denied ever taking his pulse over the Russian Federation probe - which he now will oversee following Trump's decision to force out attorney general Jeff Sessions and sideline oversight that had been given by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein.

In July 2017, before joining the Justice Department, Whitaker said during an interview on CNN that he could envision a scenario in which an acting attorney general doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigations grind to nearly a halt".

"According to the chain of command, (Rosenstein) should be the attorney general", Gorton said.

When a reporter asked he if wanted Whitaker to rein in Mueller, he called it a 'stupid question.' Whitaker has spoken publicly about the need to rein in Mueller, and skeptics have called it the sole objective of his appointment.

Indivisible member Eileen Kreutz, of Industry, traveled to attend the protest after hearing about it through communications from Indivisible.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Monroe County Courthouse night to protest President Trump's ouster of his attorney general.

Paul Rosenzweig, a fellow at the non-partisan R Street Institute which specializes in public policy, said he believed Whitaker's friendship with Clovis is "probably not a problem" but that Whitaker should ask the DOJ's Professional Responsibility and Accountability Office whether he has a conflict. "What happened immediately after, Trump has taken the step of putting someone in place, that's an illegal step".

Whitaker has spoken critically about the Mueller probe and spoke in a TV interview about choking off its funding.

Responding to reports that Mueller may have been looking into financial records of the Trump Organization, he has said doing that would go "beyond the scope of the appointment of the special counsel". Whitaker has been publicly critical of the investigation in the past. She said she called on people to contact legislators and form a public outcry about Sessions' resignation that will have to be addressed. "And that is a problem for all of us".

In the president's orbit, there remains some concern about his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., though there are no outward indications that charges are imminent, according to a Republican close to the White House not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations.

Gorton added that the protest was a success, even though political activists are probably run ragged from Tuesday's elections.

Four federal judges have upheld Mueller's authority, including U.S. District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell, who rejected Miller's arguments and held him in contempt for resisting a Mueller subpoena.

Mueller has tended to make major announcements over the Russian Federation probe on Fridays.

"He has been working hard and we are in danger of having this all come to an end", she said.
