  • Thousands evacuated over fast-moving California wildfire

The two fires, the Woolsey and the Hill fires, had caused the evacuated of 105,000 in Southern California, Cal OES said. - More than 18,000 acres have been scorched in a matter of hours burning with it a hospital, a gas station and dozens of homes.

"Most of them were immobile with walkers, or spouses that were bed-ridden, so we were trying to get additional units to come and try and help us, just taking as many as we could", he said, describing the community as having "a lot of elderly, a lot of immobile people, some low-income with no vehicles".

The fire in Paradise burned fast, reports CBS News' David Begnaud.

"Had he not put out that fire, I would not have made it to the auto", she said.

The Camp Fire started around 6:30 a.m. Thursday near Pulga Road at Camp Creek Road near Jarbo Gap.

"I can't think of an area that's safe right now", Lt. Al Smith of the Butte County Sheriff's Office told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Flames from the unchecked, 8,100-hectare Camp Fire, which began early Thursday, were being driven westward by 56 km/h winds, fire officials said.

At least 75,000 homes in Ventura and Los Angeles counties are under evacuation orders, and some structures have already been destroyed, officials said.

Located 85 miles north of Sacramento (the state's capital), Paradise, a part of Butte County, has a population of around 27,000.

In less than 24 hours, the Camp Fire torched Paradise homes, - businesses, supermarkets, restaurants and a retirement home - was left "pretty much.destroyed", California Fire Capt. Scott McLean said.

A destructive and fast-moving wildfire erupted in northern California on Thursday morning, spreading rapidly due to a mix of howling winds and extremely dry conditions.

Cal Fire said the Camp Fire is only 5 percent contained.

Butte County Supervisor Doug Teeter said he was on a bulldozer that pushed cars out of the way Thursday to get to the Adventist Health Feather River Hospital in the town of Paradise.

Fire officials were working on a plan to rescue patients from a hospital after officials tried to evacuate them but had to turn back because of gridlocked traffic.

Shari Bernacett said she and her husband tried to get people to leave the mobile home park they manage in Paradise and had minutes to evacuate. A member of the town, Brynn Parrott Chatfield, shared a video of the fire while driving in a vehicle on Facebook.

Just 12 minutes after it started Thursday afternoon, the flames spread across USA 101, leaving several drivers temporarily stranded.

He says the fire's pace forced firefighters to focus on life-protection rather than saving structures and he expects that yet-to-be-determined number to be significant.

The fire was the fiercest of several wind-driven blazes across California on Thursday, during one of the state's worst years for wildfires.

Fire officials anticipate the fire would reach the Pacific Ocean.
