After the talks in Dublin, Irish foreign minister Simon Coveney said a deal in November might still be possible, but further progress is required and "we aren't quite there yet", the Sun reports.

The tough talk from Ireland came as shadow chancellor John McDonnell confirmed Labour would not support a temporary customs union with the EU.

In the letter, they caution of the economic damage that would pursue "either a destructive or blindfold Brexit", prior to the launch of Business for a People's Vote, a new campaign group.

He went on to reiterate his pledge that there would be no return to a hard border in Ireland whatever the outcome of Brexit negotiations, now on a knife-edge.

Mrs May will meet with her cabinet tomorrow to brief ministers on the status of Brexit negotiations, and to persuade them to rally round her solution to the Irish border issue.

Before a permanent solution can be found, the United Kingdom and EU are trying to negotiate a so-called backstop that, under an EU proposal, could see Britain and Northern Ireland trade under World Trade Organization rules but linked in a customs union with the Republic of Ireland and the rest of the EU.

However, while it was backed by 63 per cent of people who voted Remain, it was backed by just 20 per cent of Leave voters.

Mr Gauke told a Channel 4 debate show: "If we leave on no-deal terms there's no good shying away, it will be very bad for us economically".

Figures showed that 45% of people thought Brexit would be good for immigration levels, while 24% said it would be bad, and 31% said it would make no difference.

"We think there are answers to the practical issues involved".

This is a tragedy for Northern Ireland, for ties between Dublin and Belfast and for Irish-British relations.

However, if these Brexiteers are not convinced that the customs union is only a temporary measure they would nearly certainly rebel.

The letter, published in London by the Sunday Times, said: "The business community was promised that, if the country voted to leave, there would continue to be frictionless trade with the European Union and the certainty about future relations that we need to invest for the long term".

Support for remaining in the EU has soared, according to a major new poll suggesting that 54 per cent of British people now back staying in the European Union.

She is expected to warn her most stridently anti-EU MPs that they will be held responsible for the consequences of a no-deal Brexit if they do not vote for her deal.
