Amazon’s Second Headquarters Hunt May Be Near A Selection

  • Amazon Exec Rips `Leaking&apos to Bezos&apos Post on Headquarters

NY is one of the finalists in Amazon's search to build another headquarters, according to a person familiar with the talks. By Monday, the New York Times reported that Dallas was no longer in the running and that the company planned to split its original HQ2 between the two remaining locations, effectively halving the original 50,000 jobs and $5 billion of investment the company promised to each location. The Journal reported Amazon could announce its choice ー or choices ー as early as this week.

Dividing the 50,000 employees expected to staff the new headquarters would also ease the pressure from demand for housing and transportation.

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, in 2012.

Amazon, based in Seattle, is apparently seriously considering an area known as Crystal City.

After a report surfaced over the weekend putting Dallas on the short list for Amazon's second headquarters, the latest from the Wall Street Journal on Monday afternoon increases Dallas' betting odds even more.

Cleveland's bid for the Amazon HQ2 project was feeble and not remotely transparent.

Two other statistics may also stand the submarket in good stead with Amazon executives.

The news surrounding Amazon's second headquarters was just breaking yesterday afternoon as Mayor Jenny Durkan wrapped up a press conference following a less-than-ideal federal police reform hearing.

People "close to the process" also told the Post that Amazon is debating "how an announcement about the move would be made to the public".

Northern Virginia is one of three HQ2 finalists in the D.C. area. At the beginning of this year, he presciently predicted Amazon would choose NY or Washington for HQ2. New York City's Long Island City site and Arlington's Crystal City site are reportedly the "winners". Amazon already employs more than 900 people in Austin.

Amazon said it would consider costs of living in its decision-making process.

Localities have been competing to offer tax breaks, real estate plots, and other benefits to lure Amazon (amzn).

Amazon declined to comment on the Wall Street Journal report and didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the New York Times report.

I'd love to see some of that innovative energy applied to helping neighborhood businesses and smaller retailers - those most threatened by Amazon's relentless march - embrace new technology and thrive.

"It gives us a new source of growth", said Mitchell Moss, the Henry Hart Rice professor of urban policy and planning at NYU.
