  • Charles and Camilla receive official welcome as their West African tour begins

Prince Charles of Wales' first visited Ghana since 1977.

The royal couple are completing a nine-day tour of West Africa, which kicked off in the Gambia on Wednesday, celebrating the country's return to the Commonwealth this year.

The Duchess of Cornwall, on the other hand, will visit a school to meet young people trying to enter The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition.

Daily Star Online reported how it is also believed the Prince of Wales is "essentially king" already - and that it has been "confirmed" by senior royal officials. "I am sure these five days that you are going to be here will be a memorable time for both of you", said President Akufo-Addo, at the seat of the Presidency. But we are in the happier period now.

On Thursday, Prince Charles called the regime change that ousted longtime dictator Yahya Jammeh an "important milestone". Meanwhile, Camilla, who is President of the Women of the World Festival, will attend an event featuring Ghana's top female leaders. "Some of them were happy, some of them not so happy".

The royal tour will also see the prince and his wife visit Ghana and Nigeria.

In a TV interview in 1995, when speaking about her troubled relationship with Prince Charles, the Princess famously declared: "Well, there were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded".

During their visit to Accra, Charles and Camilla are due to attend a State Banquet celebrating the ties between the United Kingdom and Ghana.

Despite the heat, Prince Charles looked his usual dapper self in a pale grey suit, complete with a lilac shirt, patterned tie and a smart pocket square.

In February, Gambia was accepted back into the Commonwealth of Nations, which is made up mostly of countries that were once British colonies.
