  • Army ‘justifies’ killing of Shi’ites with Trump’s ‘consider stones as rifles’ comment

The Nigerian Army has used President Donald Trump's own words about the use of force against migrants throwing stones to justify shooting at Shia Muslim protesters.

The commander-in-chief said rocks would be considered the same as firearms if thrown at USA troops whom he had deployed to the southern border, warning that the Americans could shoot the migrants if attacked. We are not going to put up with that.

"They want to throw rocks at our military, [then] our military fights back", he continued.

According to The New York Times, social media videos show Muslim protesters throwing rocks at soldiers and then being shot in the back as they attempted to run away.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) said 49 of its members were killed after the army and police fired live bullets at crowds who marched near and in the capital Abuja.

The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria issued a statement Thursday expressing concern about the "deaths resulting from clashes between Nigerian security forces and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria".

On Thursday, 120 of 400 IMN members arrested by police on Monday were charged with "rioting, disturbance of public peace and causing hurt", said a court official in Abuja on Friday.

A spokesman for the Nigerian army told the BBC "this is what Trump was talking about", and said their decision to fire live rounds at protesters was justified because they were armed.

Samantha Power, who served as ambassador to the United Nations under President Barack Obama, tweeted an image of the now-deleted Twitter post by the Nigerian military.

In astatement responding to Mr Trump's remarks, Amnesty International's Secretary General Kumi Naidoo had earlier said: "We reject these vicious policies".

In Nigeria, Trump is a popular figure among many people who praise what they regard as his straightforwardness and frank talk despite his reported insult to the nation previous year when he said Nigerians in the United States would never "go back to their huts" in Africa. "But they do that with us, they're going to be arrested for a long time".

The Nigerian Army, which has been accused of using excessive deadly force against Muslim protesters, appeared to use a recent comment by President Donald Trump to justify the violence, according to CBS News. What did David use to kill Goliath?

Despite its history of massacring innocent civilians in the war with Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, detaining innocent citizens and raping women and girls fleeing war-torn communities, the Nigerian military has been the recipient of warplane sales and other gear from the United States. "I believe you know that he uses stone", Agim said.

Osai Ojigho, Executive Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said: "Basic human rights are not subject to whims of the world's leaders".
