President Trump sends thousands of troops to the Mexican border

Though that caravan once numbered as many as 7,000, it has shrunk significantly, although it has become hard to give an exact number as migrants have advanced toward small towns any way they can.

He said any migrants seeking asylum will have to present themselves at a point of entry and warned that anybody breaking the law with "meritless claims" will be held. "This is an invasion. We are building massive numbers of tents and we will hold them in tents".

Some migrants in one of the caravans clashed with Mexican police at the Mexico-Guatemala border, hurling stones and other objects as they tried to cross the global bridge. So far, it is not certain whether any operative suffered any injury but Guatemalan officers were hurt. "Some were very seriously injured, and they were throwing rocks in their face".

"When they throw rocks like they did at the Mexico military police, I say: Consider it a rifle", Mr Trump said.

President Donald Trump's decision to send as many as 15,000 troops to the southern border has drawn sharp and unusual criticism from former military leaders, who have called the deployment "wasteful" and raised worries that the president might be using the military as a political tool to influence the midterm elections just days away.

Trump said Thursday he was "not going to put up with" any sort of violence directed at those US forces, warning the military would fight back. There are billions of people in the world living at the poverty level.

In a meandering speech at the White House about immigration, Trump recycled numerous talking points he touts on the campaign trail - but offered little in the way of concrete ways to address the problems he embellished.

The Trump administration has tried a variety of approaches to deter people from trying to reach the United States - most controversially a "zero tolerance" policy of criminally charging every adult migrant who crosses the border illegally, separating parents from their children.

Then, clarifying his previous statement, Trump added: "I didn't say shoot". The migrants are still more than 1,000 kilometers (more than 620 miles) from the US, a distance that will likely take several weeks for them to walk. Trump has repeatedly addressed the issue of who exactly is included among the thousands of caravaners, including in a series of tweets Wednesday. We're not going to put up with that.

"You come into the country - you're like two months old ... and you're gonna bring 'em all - your aunts and uncles and grandfathers and lots of people", he said.

But the government has been flummoxed by what Kevin McAleenan, commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, calls the "asylum gap": the inability to stop people from making false claims for asylum and living legally in the US for years while their cases proceed.

On Friday, another caravan of migrants - this time from El Salvador - waded over the Suchiate River into Mexico, bringing 1,000 to 1,500 people who want to reach the US border. And you look at what's happening in Guatemala along with El Salvador and Honduras.

Trump has nonetheless mounted an enormous show of force in response to their movement - coinciding with elections that will determine which party controls Congress.

Probably not. In remarks to reporters a day after suggesting that rock throwers would be considered as using rifles, Trump declared that any members of the caravan who throw rocks will be arrested, not shot. He also has said he plans an executive order to unilaterally end the constitutionally protected right of citizenship for children born to non-U.S. citizens.

Trump denied politics was behind his proposals.
