  • 2 bound bodies found in NYC were missing Virginia sisters

New York City police are still searching for answers in the case of two Saudi-born sisters found duct-taped together in the Hudson River a week ago.

Rotana and Tala Farea washed ashore in a stretch of Riverside Park near West 68th Street on October 24, one day after her mother told cops that she received a call at her home in Fairfax, Virginia from the Saudi Arabian Embassy stating that her daughters had applied for asylum, police sources said.

The women's bodies washed up along the banks of the Hudson River in Riverside Park, on the Upper West Side, Wednesday, Oct. 24.

A day before their bodies were discovered, their mother told detectives she had received a call from an official at the Saudi Arabian embassy, ordering the family to leave the U.S. because her daughters had applied for political asylum, NY police said.

Detectives have been in Virginia, where Tala had been reported missing in August, Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told media.

The medical examiner is trying to determine the official cause of death. However, there was no trauma to their bodies that would indicate they had jumped from the bridge.

Rotana Farea had been enrolled at George Mason University until the spring.

"We are looking at all clues in their past life", Shea said on Tuesday. "We are out to get justice for those two girls and find out exactly what happened".

Tala Farea and Rotana Farea are seen in these undated photos released by the New York Police Department.

Fairfax police confirmed to DailyMail.com that at least one Farea sister was reported missing by family.

The Consulate General is following closely with local authorities the investigation of the two Saudi citizens found in the Hudson river. A George Mason spokesman called the news of her death "tragic", and said the university was cooperating with police.

NYPD said the reason they released the images was because they were not getting any leads that would help the investigation based on the sketches released earlier last week. Rotana Farea had been enrolled at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, but left in the spring and may have moved to NY at some point, according to media reports.
