The leader of France's Socialists, Olivier Faure, expressed his sympathy to the people of Brazil who he said had "witnessed the election of a xenophobe, homophone, misogynist, dictatorship admirer and enemy of the media who spreads fake news".

Brazil's current president, Michel Temer, has congratulated Bolsonaro on his "historic victory" and guaranteed that there will be a peaceful transfer of power.

Mr Bolsonaro sealed the support of the business sector, as well as Brazil's powerful "Beef, bullets and Bible" caucus - comprising the farming lobby, security hardliners and Evangelical Christians. He has promised to crack down on violent crime and has been a frequent critic of womens' rights, gay rights and black rights, advocated torture and killings by police. He frequently disparaged women, gays and blacks, and said he would name military men to his Cabinet.

But in an anti-establishment climate, his message has sold better than Haddad's.

Bolsonaro's campaign was riddled with controversy, including a stabbing incident that almost killed him on the campaign trail in September. Voting machines furnished by the Brazilian government were transported to Framingham to facilitate the election. Spokesman Steffen Seibert said "it remains to be seen what the policies of the newly elected president will look like".

Bolsonaro also said he would shut down the Palestinian embassy in Brazil, noting that Palestine isn't a country.

Donning a Jair Bolsonaro sweater outside of Framingham's Memorial Building, Andre Coutinho stated he's supporting Bolsonaro because he believes he will bring a much needed perspective and hopefully incite economic prosperity. In a call a year ago with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, Trump even praised Duterte's self-described crackdown on drugs, which in effect is a brutal campaign of extrajudicial killings that has left over 12,000 people dead.

The similarities between the presidents could usher in a new era of cooperation between the Western hemisphere's two largest countries on trade, as Trump tweeted, but also on the humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela, countering drug trafficking, and pushing back against environmental regulations.

The new president's first foreign visits will be to Chile, followed by the U.S. and Israel. The 69-year-old Guedes is to become "super minister" for economics. Mr. Witzel stands at 60 percent of votes, with just under one-third of ballots still to be counted.

In a sign of how tense the race got, Haddad did not congratulate Bolsonaro and only on Monday morning did he wish him luck.

"Bolsonaro rejects the policies and corruption of the past that brought Brazil to its current state", wrote Roger Noriega, the top USA diplomat for Latin America and US envoy to the Organization of American States under President George W. Bush.

But an even larger portion of voters reject Haddad and the tarnished legacy of his Workers' Party.

Protester: "I am in mourning, not for me, but for Brazil, which doesn't deserve this".

In particular, a Brazilian investigative journalism group reported more than 70 politically motivated attacks in the first 10 days of this month.

Haddad won in the north-east of Brazil, the heartland of the Workers' Party and the stronghold of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom Haddad replaced on the Workers' Party ticket after Lula was barred from running due to his corruption conviction.
