  • Student shot at high school in Matthews suspect in custody

NORTH CAROLINA- One student was injured in an early Monday morning shooting at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina, police say. Matthews Police Captain Stason Tyrell said the school resource officer sent a command to lock the school down and within five to seven minutes were able to apprehend Cuffie, who had surrendered to a teacher and admitted to shooting McKeithen. The suspect was taken into custody and questioned by police.

"This is believed to be an isolated incident and the scene is now being secured", police stated.

The school is located just outside Charlotte at 1810 Matthews-Mint Hill Road.

The shooting happened at a Charlotte-area high school around 7:15 local time.

Tyrrell said a fight inside the school led to the shooting. He said the system was reviewing its security procedures.

Guardians and parents were advised of the incident via email and telephone calls, CMS said. A large group of frustrated parents headed back to the school to "demand answers" and get their children.

Jatwan Craig Cuffie is accused of shooting a classmate dead in a hallway in Butler High School on the morning of October 29. Classes will proceed on campus today for students remaining on campus.

However, many parents ignored the command and dozens were standing at the school's front doors when students began leaving the building shortly after 9 a.m.

Brenda Kenyon, Ryan's mother, said police at the scene told parents to gather at nearby Elevation Church.
