"The actions of Robert Bowers represent the worst of humanity", USA attorney for western Pennsylvania Scott Brady told reporters.

Bob Jones, head of the FBI's Pittsburgh office, said that worshippers "were brutally murdered by a gunman targeting them simply due to their faith", though he cautioned the shooter's full motive was not yet known.

Bowers repeated Sunday the killings are being listed as a hate crime.

This is an attack-one we never imagined would happen on American soil-against the Jewish people.

Bowers purportedly told investigators after he was captured that "all these Jews need to die"'.

"It's time to join together as brothers and sisters ... to condemn those who are perpetuating the violence and condemn those who are creating an atmosphere where hate and violence is fostered, starting with the outrageous rhetoric of the president of the United States of America", the Rev. Michael Pfleger said in one of the first addresses.

Police said the suspect had three handguns and an assault-style rifle at the shooting.

Ross said she grew up in Squirrel Hill, just a block away from the synagogue where the shooting took place. It's reported Bowers exchanged gunfire with police before retreating back inside the synagogue.

Pittsburgh authorities have released the identities of all 11 victims, including two brothers, a dentist, and a new grandfather, who were gunned down while worshipping at the synagogue. The alleged killer, Gregory Bush, had a history of mental illness and had made racist threats, CNN said, citing court records. One of those is critically wounded, but the condition of the fourth is not known.

By dawn Sunday, crowds took to the streets of the historically Jewish Squirrel Hill neighborhood despite the rain to light candles and mourn the people killed there. The man, who gave himself up to police, has been charged with 29 federal counts, and, according to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will most likely face a death penalty. His family is going to miss him terribly and I am going to miss him.

The gunman had posted anti-Semitic content on social network Gab under the username "onedingo", and the bio on his account, now suspended, read: "Jews are the children of Satan".

In a statement, Gab.com confirmed the profile belonged to Mr Bowers and also said it had suspended the account and contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation about it.

The mass shooting prompted security alerts at houses of worship around the country and condemnation from politicians and religious leaders.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and others gather on 28 October 2018 outside of the Tree of Life Synagogue after a shooting there left 11 people dead in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh on 27 October 2018. "They didn't", Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

Trump suggested that the shooting could have been prevented had there been an armed guard inside the synagogue.

He also called the shooting a wicked act of pure evil, called on Americans to rise above hate, and ordered U.S. flags at the White House and public buildings to be flown at half-staff. "It is part of the fabric of Pittsburgh", Mr. Peduto said. I come quite frequently to Pittsburgh and I love the Jewish community here.
