Manchester United bounced back from a disappointing week to beat Everton 2-1 at Old Trafford. This was a much-needed win for Jose Mourinho after their 2-2 draw against Chelsea.

Mourinho is happy for Pogba to keep taking penalties but has suggested he changes his trademark technique.

However, the Red Devils hung on to claim all three points and move up to eighth place in the Premier League table.

Everton were aggrieved to go in at the break behind.

Paul Pogba broke the deadlock for Jose Mourinho's charges in the 27th minute from the penalty spot, tucking home from close range after his initial strike was saved by Pickford.

The hosts veered from passive to purposeful in an opening period that Everton started well.

United looked a little creaky defensively but were growing into the match at the other end. Everybody knows Martial and today he showed the Martial touch. The referee awarded the kick after Anthony Martial went down in the box following a challenge from Idrissa Gueye.

Smalling was put in a hard position by Paul pogba in the second half after the Frenchman attempted a ridiculously flamboyant chip in the centre of the park which only achieved setting up the visitors with a free run on goal, which Richarilson made the most of.

Martial followed up his performance in the first half with a sweetly struck first time effort that curled beautifully into the right corner of the net. Everton almost pulled one back in the 51st minute via Bernard who was played in by Richarlison but his shot hit the side net as De Gea looked on.

Romelu Lukaku has been the player in the firing line of the Man United fans in recent weeks and he was finally dropped this afternoon for the crucial game against Everton.

Five minutes later another United attack down the Everton right saw Rashford net after Pickford could only parry a shot from Pogba, but the flag was already up for offside.

Everton spurned a glorious chance to reduce the arrears and get back in the game as Richarlison found Sigurdsson and he released Bernard to run in and round De Gea before inexplicably hitting the side netting with the goal gaping. Martial notched United's second after the break with a sweetly struck first-time effort from long range.

Tension built as both sides pushed to score, with Martial wasting a glorious chance when put through one-on-one in stoppage time. Fortunately, it didn't cost us the three points.
