  • US revokes 21 Saudi visas over Khashoggi death

"These penalties will not be the last word on the matter from the United States", Pompeo told reporters in Washington.

A person "familiar with the audio" told the Washington post that it was "compelling" and could lead the U.S. to hold Saudi Arabia accountable.

Saudi Arabia - seen as the linchpin of the Trump administration's strategy to counter Iran's influence in the Middle East - is a top buyer of USA military equipment.

After initially maintaining that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive, Saudi Arabia finally conceded he had died but said it was the result of "a fight" that broke out, not a planned murder.

Karen Attiah, the global opinion editor at The Post, has been particularly vocal about the situation for Khashoggi's four children, three of whom, she said, have dual U.S. citizenship.

The Turkish and Saudi versions of Khashoggi's slaying - neither of which is on the record from the officials' governments - do not match.

"Neither the Vienna Convention nor other worldwide laws allow the investigation into such a brutal murder to be cloaked behind the shield of diplomatic immunity", the president told members of his ruling party in Ankara.

According to Spanish media, Saudi Arabia had threatened to cancel a 1.8 billion euro ($2 billion) contract with Spain to buy warships if the bomb sale did not take place. The evidence of Turkish investigators "indicates that the suspects in the incident had committed their act with a premeditated intention", the Saudi government statement said.

Turkey is pursuing the case, Erdogan said, as both a "representative of humanity's shared conscience and also for its sovereign rights".

"Pinning such a case on some security and intelligence members will not satisfy us or the worldwide community", he added.

Central Intelligence Agency director Gina Haspel heard an audio recording of the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during her visit to Turkey this week, two sources told Reuters on Thursday, the first indication Ankara has shared its key evidence.

Reports said intelligence officers intercepted seven phone calls from a hit squad member to Mohammed bin Salman's private office on the day Mr Khashoggi went missing.

"They had a very bad original concept".

Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi met with Saudi Prince Khalid bin Salman, who is the crown prince's brother and also serves as the Saudi ambassador to the USA, at the Saudi Embassy in Washington in late 2017 or early 2018, NBC News reported.

Vice President Mike Pence said Erdogan's assessment of the killing "underscores the determination" of the Trump administration "to find out what happened".

Jeremy Hunt, the foreign secretary said he was "deeply concerned to hear President Erdogan describe Jamal Khashoggi's murder as pre-meditated". "I don't want to lose all of that investment that's being made in our country", he said.

It also contradicts many observers who believe the complex scheme that led to Khashoggi's death could not have occurred without the knowledge of the crown prince, who controls all major levers of power in the kingdom with the blessing of his father, King Salman. We are seeking answers to this. "And after his disappearance we made clear that Saudi Arabia must cooperate with Turkey and conduct a full and credible investigation". "As of now, we expect of them to openly bring to light those responsible, from the highest ranked to the lowest, and to bring them to justice".

Meanwhile, the Turkish President has not confirmed if a recording of Khashoggi's murder and alleged torture exists.

Video footage even shows what Turkish officials referred to as an apparent "body double" - a man approximately the same height as Khashoggi and seemingly wearing some of his clothes - leaving the consulate by a back door.

Despite the evidence and worldwide pressure, the crown prince has denied any role in the killing of Khashoggi, a critic of bin Salman who wrote for The Washington Post.

He was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October the second.

Surveillance cameras had been disconnected in the Saudi consulate before The Washington Post's columnist's arrival, the President added. "So they will listen to those stakeholders and shareholders", Hamod said.

In an earlier interview, Jackie also spoke to Khashoggi about the prince.

The Turkish president said that the names of suspects provided by Saudi Arabia matched those identified by Turkish authorities during their investigation. In his speech to Turkey's Parliament, Erdogan said the teams arrived in separate groups - two sets of three people and one group of nine.
