"There's a 70-to-75 percent chance El Nino will develop in the next few months". The active El Nino winter in North America - in the Midwest and in Canada is usually become warmer.

An overall mild winter is expected when it comes to temperatures, with most of the US expected to see warmer than normal temperatures, some much warmer than normal, according to the NOAA outlook from its Climate Prediction Center.

NOAA says much of the northern and western US will have warmer-than-normal conditions with the southeast having equal chances for temps that run either below-normal, near-normal or above-normal.

The only part of the country that can expect typical winter temperatures will likely be in the Southeast, spanning the states you see below that are colored white, from Florida to OH and as far west as Arkansas.

Eric Kurth, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's Sacramento office, said that although the north coast can expect average precipitation this winter, it will be an increase from the drier-than-average conditions of past year, which may help clear up some short-term drought conditions in those regions.

An El Niño is an irregularly occurring atmospheric event caused by the development of a warm band of ocean water off the Pacific coast of South America.

As for that other big winter factor - snow - Halpert says the weather service has no prediction for Maine.

Drought conditions are likely to persist across portions of the Southwest, Southern California, the central Great Basin, central Rockies, Northern Plains and portions of the interior Pacific Northwest. No place in the U.S.is expected to experience cooler-than-average temperatures, according to NOAA. Northern Florida and southern Georgia have the greatest odds for above-average precipitation this winter. The southern states of the US, as well as those in the Mid-Atlantic, are expected to receive above-normal precipitation.

The Farmer's Almanac said that for its winter outlook, the temperatures are going to be cold with "plenty of snow". The northern half stays drier while the southern half gets extra precipitation. But in case you need some talking down, a new forecast from NOAA says that at the very least, it won't be a nightmare this year.
