Authorities said the perpetrator has sustained life-threatening injuries.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police refused to speculate whether the incident was terror related, said DW's David Martin.

"We have made contact with the attacker", he said, adding that police were trying to clarify "what does this man want, what are his demands, and is he armed?"

The man had held the woman for two hours in a pharmacy at the city's main railway station.

Heavily armed police now surround the station, which has been evacuated and closed off to the public.

But shortly afterwards police commandos stormed the pharmacy with stun grenades.

Police tweeted that the hostage was slightly injured and was now being treated.

Gilles said specially-trained officers were talking to the hostage taker, who hadn't been identified.

Reports speak of at least one explosion during the incident.
