As of Thursday morning, the storm has claimed the lives of two people, one in Florida and one in Georgia, and caused a devastating amount of damage.

Hurricane Michael, the third most powerful storm ever to strike the US mainland, headed northeast on Thursday, weakened but still set to soak Georgia and the Carolinas after devastating the Florida Panhandle.

It's seems that hurricane Michael's eventual loss tally for the insurance and reinsurance sector is most likely to be in the single-digit billions of dollars, how high up remains uncertain.

Michael remained unsafe even though it weakened over the course of Wednesday afternoon and evening. A pine tree punched a hole in their roof and he said the roar of the storm sounded like a jet engine as the winds accelerated.

The video shows flattened homes, roofs ripped apart, and debris scattered throughout Mexico Beach.

Roads were filled with piles of floating debris.

Parts of Virginia were struck with heavy rains and flash flooding, said Jeff Caldwell, a spokesman for the state Department of Emergency Management.

After it ravaged the Panhandle, Michael barreled into south Georgia as a Category 3 hurricane - the most powerful ever recorded for that part of the neighboring state.

The coastal city of Apalachicola reported a storm surge of almost 8ft (2.5m).

"Water will come miles in shore and could easily rise over the roofs of houses", he said.

"I'll be travelling to Florida very, very shortly and I just want to wish them all the best". Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses were left without electricity in Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

KBW's analysts said that they expect the sector's overall insured losses will be manageable and will have limited impact on property reinsurance pricing at the renewals ahead. "There was a tree involved".

The sheriff's office in Gadsden County near Tallahassee says it "can now confirm 4 storm-related fatalities following Hurricane Michael", all of which happened "in relation to or occurred during the storm".

River and street flooding, fallen trees and the threat of tornadoes began spreading into central North Carolina on Thursday, prompting the state's governor to urge people to avoid travel until Tropical Storm Michael clears the region tonight or tomorrow. Forecasters said it could drop up to 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain over the Carolinas and Virginia before pushing out to sea in coming hours.

Long, the head of FEMA, said many Florida buildings were not built to withstand a storm above the strength of a Category 3 hurricane on the five-level Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

The storm has killed at least 11 people, mostly from trees falling onto houses.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for all of Florida, freeing federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses.

At 11 a.m., the center of the storm was 35 miles of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Sally Crown rode out Michael on the Panhandle thinking at first the worst damage was the many trees downed in her yard.

The hurricane made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, at around 14:00 (18:00 GMT) on Wednesday, according to the NHC.
