  • Tracking Michael: Sustained winds now over 100 mph for Hurricane Michael

The storm is responsible for at least 11 deaths.

"For North Carolina, Michael isn't as bad as Florence, but it adds unwelcome insult to injury, so we must be on alert", Gov. Roy Cooper said.

Even before landfall, the hurricane disrupted energy operations in the Gulf, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 percent and natural gas output by almost one-third as offshore platforms were evacuated before the storm hit. A little more and he would have reached the most destructive of the 5th category, which is called catastrophic. "A river just started coming down the road".

Over 900,000 homes and businesses in Florida, Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas were without power.

Satellite images show how the powerful storm changed the landscape of Florida's Panhandle.

The injured in Florida were taken to hospitals in Tallahassee, with some hurt after the storm by breaking tree limbs and falls, said Allison Castillo, director of emergency services at the city's Capital Regional Medical Center.

In Panama City, near where Michael came ashore on Wednesday afternoon, there were uprooted trees and downed power lines. Homes were split open by fallen trees. Hundreds of cars had broken windows, many turned askew by the wind. Officials say that four Florida hospitals have closed due to the storm, including two in Panama City, which have been forced to evacuate patients. Numerous 600 families who live there had followed orders to pack what they could in a single suitcase as they were evacuated. The American Red Cross is on the ground providing safe shelter, relief supplies and more to residents in Florida and surrounding states.

"I will not recall you and your families until we can guarantee your safety".

Zee was in the eye wall of the storm for more than an hour, with conditions were so bad that she and her team lost the ability to broadcast.

An insurance company that produces models for catastrophes estimated the damage at $8 billion.

The winds were so strong they tore down a canopy over a Texaco gas pumping station in Inlet Beach. It doesn't include losses covered by the National Flood Insurance Program.

It also brought the dangers of a life-threatening storm surge.

- The human cost: A man in Gadsden County, Florida, killed by a falling tree, and an 11-year-old girl in Seminole County, Georgia, killed when a carport blew through the roof of her home.

The Talmadge Bridge on USA 17 over the Savannah River between Savannah, Georgia and SC remains closed because of the threat of high winds on the suspension bridge. He said he thinks she was home when Michael hit.

The storm is likely to fire up the debate over global warming.

Michael, the third most powerful storm ever to strike the USA mainland, weakened into a tropical storm over SC.

Some fear the toll can only rise as rescue teams reach isolated areas and work through storm debris.

Franklin County Sheriff A.J. Smith near the vulnerable coast said his deputies had gone door to door in some places urging people to evacuate. But it moved fast and intensified quickly, and emergency authorities lamented that many people ignored the warnings.

Asked if there would be more evacuation orders, he said officials were monitoring the situation but that people in potentially affected areas should not take any chances against such a large storm surge. Last year, they welcomed children who were displaced by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
