  • Iranian-Saudi detente could transform the region and US power is there to prevent

U.S. peace activists Code Pink mounted a protest in front of the Saudi Embassy in Washington on Wednesday, brandishing signs saying "Where is Jamal Khashoggi?" and "Khashoggi: Another Victim of Saudi Violence".

In this February 1, 2015, photo, Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi speaks during a press conference in Manama, Bahrain. As it escalates, WWE could potentially be forced to sever ties with the country, and Murphy's words are particularly pertinent to their business as he represents the state in which WWE HQ is based. After a positive first meeting with consular staff, who welcomed him warmly and assured him that the necessary paperwork would come through, Jamal was hardly concerned ahead of his second visit.

"We're demanding everything", Trump said when asked if he was demanding information from the Saudis.

On his first global trip as president, Mr Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $US110 billion in proposed arms sales.

Bird has also called on the trustees of the Natural History Museum in London not to provide the museum as a venue for the Saudi Arabia annual national day celebration, organised by the Saudi embassy, and called for a protest outside the building.

"I wish Jamal would be safe. and I wish the safety to all the liberals and dissidents in the world who deserve the protection of the conscience of the world, more than [they have] now".

But Turkish officials declined to go on record as Turkey tries to manage its hard relationship with regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia.

Trump, who took his first overseas trip as US president to the kingdom and whose son-in-law Jared Kushner has close ties to Prince Mohammed, said Tuesday he had not yet talked to the Saudis about Khashoggi, "but I will be at some point", without elaborating.

The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that before Khashoggi disappeared, us intelligence had intercepted communications in which the Saudis had been discussing a plot to abduct him.

On his first worldwide trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

But after several of his friends were arrested, his column was cancelled by the al-Hayat newspaper and he was allegedly warned to stop tweeting, Mr Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia for the US.

"We want to see what's going on there", he said.

Britain's foreign minister called for urgent answers and the chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Corker, who has seen classified intelligence on the case, said information pointed to Khashoggi being killed.

Meanwhile, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he has a call in to Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, who has appealed to the president and first lady Melania Trump for help.

The Trump administration must report to Congress within 120 days.

Turkish officials have said they believe Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate and his body removed.

"Saudi authorities said they were open to cooperation and that a search can be conducted at the consulate building", the Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement on Tuesday.

"We are investigating all aspects of the event", Mr Erdogan said on Thursday, adding: "This is an incident which took place in our country; it is not possible for us to remain silent".

But he added: "The alleged killing of Khashoggi is a death blow to all those hopes and expectations, unless the Saudis can somehow explain what happened and accept full responsibility".

Wednesday's Turkish media reports were the most detailed accounts yet of what they say is the Turkish government's investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance. "I also urge Saudi Arabia, especially King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to show the same level of sensitivity and release CCTV footage from the consulate".
