Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he plans to push North Korea's Kim Jong-un to ditch his nukes when the two meet Sunday, adding he hopes to make clear to the dictator "that we understand what each side is truly trying to achieve".

But even US ally South Korea is looking for exemptions on sanctions after Moon and Kim announced a list of inter-Korean projects to work on together when they met in September, including reopening roads and railways, and creating new economic zones.

"Most importantly, both the leaders believe there is real progress that can be made, substantive progress that can be made at the next summit and so we are going to get it at a time that works for each of the two leaders and at a place that works for both of them", he said.

Pompeo said "he agreed with Chairman Kim to hold the second US-North Korea summit at the earliest date possible", South Korea's presidential office said in a statement.

In a tweet, Pompeo later said: "We continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore Summit".

A USA government plane carrying Pompeo's delegation landed at the Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, at around 5:15 pm.

"Secretary Pompeo said he and Chairman Kim concurred that they will hold the second U.S".

He did not meet Kim during that trip, which ended on poor terms.

South Korea's President Moon Jae-in met Pompeo after the top United States diplomat's trip to Pyongyang earlier in the day, which included a meeting with Kim.

Pompeo, on the third stop of a four-leg Asian tour that began in Japan and was to end in China on Monday, then met South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in.

An official accompanying the delegation who declined to be named said the trip had gone "better than the last time" but added that it is going to be a "long haul", according to a pool report from the lone USA journalist who accompanied Pompeo to Pyongyang.

In Tokyo on Saturday, Pompeo promised he would bring up Japan's concerns about North Korea's alleged abductions of Japanese citizens and its nuclear ambitions.

North Korea's leader Kim also struck a positive tone during his meeting with Pompeo. He is expected to leave for China on Tuesday.

North Korea has dismissed that demand - calling it a "fiction" in a commentary after Pompeo's last visit in July - and the USA insistence that North Korea's denuclearization come first, leaving talks at a standstill. -North Korea diplomatic contact since the June summit between the leaders of the two countries in Singapore. "I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future", Trump tweeted.

Nauert's statement made no mention of North Korea's commitment to dismantle the important Yongbyon nuclear facility, a potentially troubling sign for US negotiators.

Until recently, Pyongyang has appeared to be increasing its demands.

For his part, Moon said that "I dearly hope that your latest visit, as well as the upcoming U.S". Japan, notably, has been wary of Trump's initiative, fearing it could affect its long-standing security relationship with the U.S. "It is such an oxymoronic, two-faced behavior'".

North Korea's state newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, featured eight photos of the meeting on its front page, including shots of Kim and Pompeo smiling and shaking hands, as well as some with Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong.

Pompeo was joined by USA special representative on DPRK issues Stephen Biegun, and Kim was joined by Kim Yo Jong, first vice department director of the Central Committee of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea (WPK), the statement said.

Kang said such steps would serve to dispel mistrust between Pyongyang and Washington and speed up negotiations by avoiding the risk of bogging it down over the verification process. "Maybe we will get further than that", said the top United States diplomat.
