  • United States First Lady Melania Trump is expected in Kenya on Friday as part of her first solo international trip as FLOTUS

First Lady Melania Trump was nearly knocked down by a baby elephant on Friday while on safari in Nairobi National Park in Kenya.

During the Friday visit, the US First Lady greeted, sang and danced with the children at The Nest Children's Home before she was briefed on their progress and undertakings.

Upon arrival in Nairobi, Kenya, Mrs Trump is expected to visit State House as her first stop.

US First Lady Melania Trump arrived in Kenya on Thursday night, to a busy schedule of the East African nation, before heading to Egypt.

The Africa trip is thought to have been part of an attempt to do some damage control after President Trump's disparaging remarks about the continent.

At least one baby elephant got a little too rowdy and caused a U.S. Secret Service agent to step in and hold the first lady back, Kenyan newspaper The Star reported.

After her tour around the former fort, Trump said, "It's very emotional". "I want to thank the teachers and children at Chipala Primary school for today's warm welcome and commend the staff for their commitment to providing their students the education and tools needed to grow and to be able to contribute to a prosperous society".

Another one of Melania Trump's massive white hats is making headlines - but not in a good way.

"Mrs Trump has done her best to soften the image of an administration known for its sharp elbows, and of a president who outraged many Africans with his disparaging remarks", the report said.

Children living at The Nest in Nairobi greeted her with singing and dancing, and it didn't take long before the typically reserved USA first lady gave in to the moment.

As Miliam sat sounding out letters and words, Trump sat with her hands clasped and smiled as she watched the group.

"When people think of Africa, they have these standard narratives", Dionne said. "We want his wife to see it that Africans needs global aid particular on reproductive health which Trump cut which is affecting women and young girls negatively", says Racheal working in health sector in Malawi.

One of Melania Trump's first stops in Ghana was a baby weighing program at a hospital, where she saw firsthand USA -supported efforts to bolster newborn health.

After leaving the ambassador's residence, Mrs. Trump went to the State House for tea with Gertrude Mutharika, her Malawian counterpart.
