  • U.S. Senate heads to final vote on Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination

"Thirty-five years ago, the other students in the room chose to laugh and look the other way as sexual violence was perpetrated on me by Brett Kavanaugh", Ramirez said in a statement on Saturday.

A final confirmation vote could come as soon as Saturday. Murkowski said she'd use an obscure procedure that lets one senator offset the absence of another without affecting the outcome.

Attorneys for Christine Blasey Ford, the 51-year-old research psychologist and professor who accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers in the 1980s, say their client is not interested in murmurings that Democrats may seek to impeach Kavanaugh if they reclaim the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections.

Republicans have a 51-49 majority in the Senate and this razor-thin majority has carried the vote forward, despite two swing votes.

The announcements by Republican Susan Collins of ME and Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia ended most of the suspense over a political battle that has transfixed the nation - though die-hard Democrats insisted on arguing through the night to a mostly empty Senate chamber.

"Collins and Flake voted yes, while Murkowski voted no after changing her mind on the way to the Senate hearing and deciding that Kavanaugh, whom she called 'a good man", wasn't the right man for the job.

Brett Kavanaugh's path to the US Supreme Court is all but assured after two senators said they will elect the conservative to the country's highest court.

Mr Kavanaugh - President Donald Trump's pick for the prestigious role - has been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the past week after he was accused of sexually assaulting a number of women.

In a floor speech later on Friday, Murkowski expressed sympathy for both Ford and Kavanaugh.

Murkowski told reporters after she left the Senate floor that this was "the most hard evaluation" she's made.

"I don't think she has any regrets", Banks said. In his testimony, Kavanaugh said he could not answer questions about whether a president could pardon himself or whether a sitting president can be required to respond to a subpoena.

Along with Sen. Joe Manchin's (D-WV) vote, this was enough to set up a final vote of the full Senate Saturday afternoon.

They converged on Capitol Hill and held a rally outside the Supreme Court, chanting: "Kavanaugh has got to go!"

Ford wrote Koegler an email saying that the person who assaulted her was the president's "favorite for SCOTUS", he said.

"I do hope it reminds us that we can take very small steps to be gracious with one another and maybe those small, gracious steps can lead to more", Murkowski said Friday in announcing her intent.
