Conor McGregor brands Khabib Nurmagomedov 'petrified' ahead of UFC 229

  • McGregor is in the unusual position of the underdog

"Whoever has the belt, (I want to fight)", Pettis said.

The differences continue all the way through to the strengths of each fighter: Nurmagomedov is famous for his wrestling and grappling; McGregor is known for his striking.

"After my surgery I made a conscious decision to not want anybody else's help that wouldn't want to help me", Ferguson said. "If somebody is late that's his problem".

McGregor will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon in the early hours of Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 229, where he'll lock horns with Nurmagomedov. "To come and shut this man up; a little rat, a little weasel, a little hard man in groups", McGregor said. I'm like, 'what the f*ck?', alright well, who do you guys want then?

Nurmagomedov for his part has remained singularly unrattled, and returned McGregor's insults with interest by questioning the Irishman's heritage. "I have to make weight and worry about myself". On the other side, while Nurmagomedov's style requires more levels and time, it's also a basic game plan: get in on his opponent, and from there, rely on being one of the strongest wrestlers in the history of the sport. "I'm sure he's hunting for a few quid as well".

McGregor, who said he cut no corners in camp and grappled for 25 minutes each with two 200-pound fighters on Wednesday, reiterated his prediction he'd knock Nurmagomedov out.

McGregor helped sell the fight before it was even announced, getting charged by NY authorities after throwing a hand truck through a bus window in Brooklyn in April at Nurmagomedov.

"My heart is black towards this man, towards his team, towards his people, I can truly see the inside of that man's head and smile".

Nurmagomedov, who is 26-0 and making the first defence of his title on Sunday, believes he's ability to stay composed in the face of McGregor's wild taunting has the former champ anxious. Why (do) I have to think about him, (if) he comes or not?

"F-k peace. There will never be peace here".

"I would be interested in an Anderson Silva bout. But if you can't aim for peace, aim between the eyes", he bellowed. I'm starving for this man's head. "Never, ever, ever, over".

Nurmagomedov has a mixed martial arts record of 26-0 and is prepared to go to extreme lengths to remain unbeaten in his professional career, saying: "He has to kill me to stop me".

When McGregor did finally arrive, he was carrying a bottle of his new Irish whiskey along with a message to Nurmagomedov.

But it is McGregor's bombastic personality and star power that drives the hype for the fight, much like it did the last time he fought in a boxing ring last August in a knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
