  • US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left is preparing his fourth trip to North Korea where he will meet leader Kim Jong Un

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit North Korea on Sunday and meet leader Kim Jong Un as the administration's hopes rise of a denuclearisation deal, the State Department said.

"Moon Jae-In briefed the United States about the outcome of the inter-Korean summit and handed Chairman Kim Jong Un's message to President Trump", South Korean Ambassador Woo Yoon-keun said to Russian media outlets after a recent summit between the Koreas.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets Pakistani Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the State Department in Washington, Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018.

Pompeo's visit comes ahead of a planned second summit between Kim and President Donald Trump.

Worth mention here Pompeo was asked for to visit Pyongyang by North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho when the two met for a summit on the sidelines of the 73 session of United Nations General Assembly in NY last week.

Biegun was appointed to the job in August amid a perceived impasse in negotiations to implement a denuclearization agreement reached by Trump and Kim at their historic summit in Singapore in June.

Cho said North Korea may have accepted the USA proposal to shut down a nuclear weapons plant in addition to the Yongbyon complex that Kim promised to close during his third summit with Moon from September 18 to 20.

But speaking two days later at the UNGA, North Korea's Foreign Minister said the ball was now in Washington's court.

"Of course, we have quite a ways to go but we look forward to the next steps in this conversation".

Even though both sides seemed to be making progress following an announcement that North Korea may be willing to allow global experts to observe the dismantlement of testing sites, Pyongyang and Washington also seemed to entrench their opposing positions during the UNGA. But he added that much work remains to be done and that the sanctions against the DPRK will stay in place "until denuclearization occurs".

The leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) are engaging in peace efforts, which have been met with skepticism from other countries, including the United States.

North Korea has been seeking a formal end to the 1950-53 Korea War, but the United States has said Pyongyang must give up its nuclear weapons first. "We've made more progress than has been made in an awfully long time and, importantly, we have done so in conditions which continue to give us the opportunity to achieve the final goal".

"There is nothing the USA could get from sanctions and it is no [one] other than them who will be put at disadvantage", the Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, said in an editorial.
